Default Photo Question - Erasing Scribble

Apologies in advance, as I know this has been addressed in the past, no doubt multiple times, but I can't remember the answer.

How difficult is it (or is it even possible) to remove ink from a vintage photo? Last night Heritage had a Ruth Gehrig photo from the luckiest man doubleheader. Ruth was decent but Gehrig's was a bunch of chicken scratch that was not by Lou (as Heritage made plain). Wasn't even a nice secretarial job by Eleanor, but was a fairly long inscription that looked awful. What are the chances you could remove the Lou scribble cleanly? It would have annoyed the heck out of me. I kept thinking about those Mr. Clean magic erasers that we used when my kids were small and wrote on the wall. Anyone have experience undertaking such an effort? Can it be done well?
