It's important to figure out how the medium handles, what you can do with it, and how it reacts to whatever surface you're working on. It's not even remotely important to make a beautiful, finished piece. That will come! I've definitely made a ton of crappy stuff in my lifetime, but the fun of it was found in the whole journey.
