I'm in a similar position as you. Collected from the late 80s to early to mid 90s and have recently got back into it.

I primarily collect Bowman Chrome. This product focuses mostly on prospects and some of the game's better players. As you mentioned, some promising players are selling for incredible prices. Also, I like shopping on eBay for under priced cards and there are plenty of opportunities to buy and hold promising prospects or flip an under priced card for an easy profit.

Bowman Chrome used to be one on the expensive side, but it's probably more middle of the road with all of the premium products available now.

Also, Bowman releases other products throughout the year that all seem to be popular.

Topps Heritage and Gypsy Queen are some of the better 'cheap' products IMO. Especially if the Heritage design is one of the better card designs from back in the day.
