14 years, has it really been that long, Trevor? Whew!
I've been steadily gravitating towards 1970s cards for some years since they are my childhood cards and are readily available in nice shape raw. In terms of modern, I like to go the National and spend some time in modern cards to see what I like and dislike. I favor the complex manufacturing of the late 1990s, especially Dufex parallel sets: Flair, Topps Stadium Club Matrix, Topps Gallery Players Private Issue, Fleer Ultra gold and platinum medallion, etc. You know, truly shiny crap. Some of which reliably sells in three figures now.
