William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy was a major league outfielder from 1888 to 1902. The first deaf ballplayer, Hoy is credited with starting the practice of umpires signaling safe and out calls.

Hoy set many records during his career and finished with a .288 batting average, 2,048 hits and 121 triples.
