I was really disappointed with a lot I missed out on a couple of weeks ago for some relatively tough boxing cards because my snipe didn't go through. Gavelsnipe has been dependable and a lot of the stuff I bid on isn't super critical. For the important stuff, I try to observe live to make sure it goes through. But my snipe was set at a little more than double what the cards ultimately sold for and I was driving at the time. Tough pill to swallow.

To add, I have zero idea why eBay would be blocking these snipes, anyway, since it can lead to lower final prices. In my case, a seller lost out on potentially as much as twice his money and they lost out on additional fees.

I can appreciate that they want bidders placing earlier bids to drive prices up and encourage more bidding -- I'm guessing that's what this is about? But so much of the population doesn't bid that way and waits until the end, anyway. Many of the early bids with traditional auction houses seem to be placed as token bids in the start simply to allow people to be able to bid on the auction on the final day. Just seems like a dumb approach on eBay's part if you consider the entire picture.
