1978 Red Sox Uniform - LITTLE HELP, PLEASE!
A college friend of mine recently asked me about this 1978 Boston Red Sox Home White Uniform that is in his possession - I think that he is considering "de-accessioning" it.
It LOOKS real to me, but I don't know much about uniforms, but you guys do! Is it REAL? What is it worth? What can I REASONABLY offer him for it, assuming that I don't want it either? Are there buyers HERE on NET54 that would be interested in it, assuming that I am able to swing the deal? ANY help would be much appreciated! IF I am able to procure it, I would be HAPPY to offer it for re-sale HERE! Thanks in advance! Greg |

Baseball Reference shows that nobody wore 39 during the 1978 MLB season. If it's real--and I'm not saying it isn't--could be a spring training jersey. Bo Diaz wore 39 in 1977 but was traded during spring training of '78 (March 31). Allenson was not in Boston until 1979.

GREAT - so far!
A little more info from my friend...he was told that the uniform DID belong to Bo Diaz, but Bo did NOT play for the Sox in 1978...and I also confirmed that apparently no one wore 39 in 1978 for the Sox. The uniform was acquired sometime in 1981-83...which does NOT mean that it is genuine, I realize... How do I (we) tell if it is real...it is NOT currently in my possession... What MIGHT it be worth? What MIGHT it sell for? What MIGHT I offer for it??? (If I sold it here, I would offer 100% satisfaction and accept a return if the new owner THOUGHT that it was anything other than genuine, of course...) |

This jersey falls into a weird pricing catagory. One of three people will want it. A Diaz collector, Red Sox fan who wants to wear it, or Red Sox fan who wants a display piece. Finding that unique buyer will be tough and could take some time. I would say you could get $100 for it to the right person. Maybe more if it was game worn but it's only considered a team issued jersey. Nothing special happens that year for the Red Sox so it does not carry any special history.

Actually, "Boston" on the front of a gray jersey was their regular season road uniforms during this time period.

Red Sox Jersey
For what it's worth, I would offer that this a 1978 Boston Red Sox road jersey. The jerseys would have been ordered by mid March for the 1978 season, and one would have been ordered for Bo Diaz. With his being traded, the jersey would have still shown up with the other uniforms, and though not worn by a roster player in 1978, would have still remained in the Red Sox inventory for subsequent use.
