Default N172 Rowe 393-7 with Denver Team Caption

A note for Jay and Joe and other N172 collectors.

Dave Rowe pose 393-7 exists with the Denver team.

The Denver Public Library apparently has a copy, as shown here:

http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm...d/26153/rec/23

I only mention this since the OJ Bible does not mention this pose as being confirmed with Denver.

Really cool! Did a quick search and found no pics of a N172 Rowe portrait online, let alone with Denver.

I want to be clear that this is not a new pose (as far as I can tell); it's just that this pose is listed in the OJ Bible as only having been confirmed with the Kansas City team.

Nice find Scot! BTW, do you have any idea how many OJs the Denver library has? We are still working on the Old Judge pop and should be out with a number soon.

Hi Jay,

I have found eight in their collection so far.

You can view them here:

Hi Adam,

Dave Rowe portraits are tough for sure. I haven't seen any offered (from KC or Denver) since I started collecting N172 Denvers eight or so years ago. The only pics I have seen are in Jay/Joe/Richard's OJ Bible.

I have mixed emotions about the new "find" at DPL since I am trying to acquire every Denver pose and that goal seems even more unattainable now.

Very interesting. I have some time off during the holidays. I may need to check this out in person.

Jay,

On another note, there is some documentation on the Web that N172 McQuaid Denver is Mortimer Martin "Mart" McQuaid, rather than James McQuaid as listed in your amazing book. See e.g.

http://metmuseum.org/collection/the-.../search/403980

Did you guys have occasion to research the James v. "Mart" McQuaid issue?

Scot

Scot, you may have brought a Cartophilic listing error to light that we missed. The bio is accurate, but per Baseball Reference the correct name is in fact Mortimer Martin McQuaid, or "Mart" for short. Subject matter 318 should perhaps be listed as:

318 McQUAID, Mortimer Martin, "Mart"

Here is link to Mart's stats

Here is link to 1889 Denver Grizzle roster

Before closing the loop on this change, we need to reference period papers to see if he went by James during his playing days (not uncommon to play under false name).

Nice catch Scot. I went and checked the Feb 9, 1889 issue of The Sporting News, and the Denver reserve list includes M McQuaid. We got the name James from the Cartophilic Society listing. We now also know the date of his birth and death.
The book was never envisioned as a "finished" work, albeit it was pretty far along. Every year we seem to learn some new facts, find some new poses, and yes correct some errors. Thank you for helping make my annotated copy a little more accurate.

Guys,

Thanks for the great information. The last thing I want to do is nitpick your tremendous work. I know from personal experience about the inevitability of minor oversights in a work about vintage cards -- especially one as sweeping and definitive as yours. All writing is, in the end, an experiment. Thanks again.

Scot
