Nixon Autopen?
Nixon's signature was typically bold without much variation in shading. But I can't tell on this one. Autopen or not?
BTW, many do not know Nixon was so close to beating JFK that he could have demanded a recount - ballot stuffing was claimed. However, he did not contest because he thought it would be bad for the country. Nixon was actually very much a patriot. That screwed up.... Last edited by Case12; 03-11-2019 at 11:55 AM. |

For example, here is a JSA Nixon auto. 30ish years younger.

Here is another example bold and strong end to end. Also early 60's.

I had always heard that he didn't request a recount because he knew that there were as many questionable Nixon votes as there were Kennedy votes.
Ahh, the sixties. |

Yes, it is an autopenned signature I believe. Here are some more.

Thank you very much for the auto pen exemplars. I wasn't able to find them myself. Many thanks!

I on these exemplars I only see two where the N crosses over the d. And those two don't match the letter I have (which an autopen would with perhaps only add shakiness...which is not the case here). I guess I will need more autopen exemplars, or this could be a real one. I think it may have been signed on a train as he crisscrossed the nation campaigning. I do know the place he refers to was on one of his train stops.

This one claims to be authentic, and is really close - but the letter heights are quite different. See top of second d. Almost like it was written around the "sincerely". What's with the smudge at the end? I am just trying to learn about autopens Same year 1960. Thoughts?

Your letter (the one you are asking about) is the autopen pattern that is second from the top on the right column. The letter you just posted an example of (the second letter) is the autopen pattern that is third from the bottom in the left column of examples. Autopens will have some variance over time even in the same pattern, and especially if different pens are used.

Here's an interesting twist. Very, very close to the first letter (identical?). But personally inscribed. I'm confused.
