Default May Pickups Thread

Kicking off the month with a couple tobacco cards. The Ganzel came from Chappell Cards at my local show in Columbus, OH this morning. Can't beat a clean and centered T206.

This has to be the earliest example of the your/you're spelling phenomenon. haha.

edit: wait! Did you spell it wrong again to make that point? Now I'm all over the place.

A common back of a fairly common HOFer, but this Jimmy Collins with a SC350,25, officially completes the backs line and HOFer set (minus the big two).

Once I get moved and all the guys back together, I’ll work on a post to show the full backs line with a different HOFer in each slot, plus Shag and Hooker in the two SL slots, and Merkle filling the slot left over after each HOFer.

Lots of fun pickups this month, congrats to all!

The card you posted made me curious about your site. You have a great collection of rare cards that present way better than their technical grades.

I have what I feel is only a decent collection compared to what others have and to what I use to have back in the 1980's and 90's, but having fun rebuilding it. Regarding grades. I have like most other collectors, a few cards that looks much better then their technical grades suggest.

Ha ha, fair enough. Most of us on this forum only have a "decent" collection when compared to the handful of members who have a world class, top level collection. But that's the great thing about the hobby, you can find a niche that works for you and build something you enjoy.

So, to rephrase, I enjoyed looking at your collection and appreciate your discerning eye for picking up nice looking rare cards, often of HOFers.

Nice E107 Overprint! One of the very few, all of which are one of a kind, without the two spots of mounting damage at the top. A rarity among rarities.

As a kid we played a tabletop game called Sports Illustrated All-Time All-Star Baseball. It was my introduction to vintage baseball that used color charts with named players (some blanks) and custom dice. We played hundreds and hundreds of games, so much fun.

One of the players I recall always doing well for me was Harry Hooper from the Boston Red Sox; he was a very good hitter, a fast runner, and a terrific outfielder.

Well, when I saw a boardie had this card for sale I of course had to have it!

(I don’t know why it’s “Ed” Hooper)

Every year in my travels, I search through thousands of postcards at flea markets, antique stores, garage sales, etc. I rarely ever find anything.

Today, I spotted a box of vintage postcards and this was in the first stack of postcards that I picked up. I feel that the 1939 postmark is rather late for this issue, but maybe the sender had it laying around for a while.

Default Wheaties mini box

Series 14 mini Wheaties panels are extremely difficult to find. I was more than thrilled to pick up a complete box, minus the top. Not sure if this one was verified as existing.

A back upgrade from my Piedmont 350 Huggins in the HOFer set, showed up in the mail today from REA. I thought I had the SOV backed Lajoie Throwing, but no such luck..

I’m pulling out some stuff that I have upgraded backs on over the last little bit, so should have some goodies on the BST shortly!

Enjoy,
Bob

Default Tough To Find Original Issue Pride Of The Yankees

Original issue lobby cards from Pride of the Yankees are very tough to find. Babe Ruth is shown in just one of the 8 cards, and that particular card is nearly impossible to fine. Glad to grab this at Heritage last night. Such a tough one to find. Condition is solid as well.

I'm a lot more active over on the postwar side of things, but am a Cubs fan and was happy to pickup these 4 earlier today - from a locally discovered collection which then got sent in to SGC:

I thought this may be interesting to a few of you. I am not quite sure what it is. It is about ~11 x 11 - ebay pickup. Cardboard. I think it may be a display top.

Thanks to Tyler and John for these three. There is another in the way, which will get the wish list down to an even 100, but it won’t arrive until late next week.
