There were 88 lots listed on Mastronet for the Egan collection........total take was $824,383.00. With 15% buyer's premium ($123,657.45 ), that makes the Egan take $948,040.45. If they have a similar amount for next auction, that's nearly a $2 million collection (counting the buyer's premium).

Without collecting anything in the 'expensive' years of the late 1980's-present, how much do you guys think Egan paid for his nearly $2 million (approx) collection?

In the 1970 edition of WHO'S WHO IN CARD COLLECTING, Richard Egan listed the value of his collection of "tens of thousands" of cards at $5000.

One William Alec Mastro states that his collection totaled 25,000 cards, and he valued the collection at $2500. Buck Barker stated that his collection totaled 15,000 cards, but declined to state a value. Larry Fritsch, 40,000 cards, no value stated. Don McPerson - 10,000 cards, $7500. Don Steinbach - 25,000, $2500. Most of the collections were valued at well under $1000 each. Frank Nagy listed no totals but stated that he had a complete set of T206, including Wagner (featured on the cover), and Plank.

Another collector listed a specific total of 8284 cards, valued at $425. He listed his occupation as "funeral director." The group boasted a mailing list of 300.

Goodie Goldfaden (15,000 cards, $5000 value) paid me $60 for 1800 1956 Topps (including several each of Aaron and Mantle) in about 1975. Since my rent at the time was $67 a month, I thought I has really taken advantage of him.

i paid over $70,000 for 149 of macphersons E107's. talk about appreciation.


most of these old time collectors paid very little for their cards and did lots of trading. this is another story of being in the right place at the right time, as very few of them cared if the cards were ever worth any serious money.
