Default n172 grading question

Posted By: Bob S

Hi folks,

Will any of the big 4 graders grade an N172 with the factory name trimmed off the bottom? As most of you know, there are a fairly large % (~20%) that are trimmed in this manner.

Thx

Bob

First, what you are saying is wrong. The percentage of cards with the factory named trimmed off the bottom is extremely small, nowhere near 20%. Second, it is very likely that the card was not miscut at the factory but trimmed later, perhaps by parents not wanting their children to see the cigarette ad.

Thanks, Jay, I was citing information from a fellow collector. Thanks for setting me straight re: the % trimmed in this manner

Will any of the big 4 grade thes, and what % loss of value might be expected ?

Bob

I always find it interesting that people think the names of compaies were trimmed off because they didn't want their kids exposed to tobacco related products. For some reason I highly doubt this since this is pretty much a recent phenomanon. More likely, the collector just wanted the picture or trimmed it down to make it fit whatever they were dispalying or storing the card in.

I've just reached Upper Lower Class. I am now officially a babe magnet for poor chicks.

Bob--Since it is most likely an altered card I wouldn't think that PSA or SGC would slab it. Such a trim should reduce the value by 50-75%.

Thanks Jay M.

It's a real shame because some specimens are strong 7's and even a few 8's, imho.

When I get them out of storage I'll post some scans. (I'm gettin' up there in age, and my Lyme disease (deer tick), has hit my knees very badly recently,, making it difficult to drive even though my car has an automatic transmission.

But I'm determined to get them asap.

Thanks, again,

Bob

Bob--Sounds like you are from my part of the country. I live in SW Connecticut and Lyme is a real problem here.

Jay,
you're in the original "belly of the beast" re: Lyme, of course. But they have steadly expanded their domain and are now showing up as far south and west as North Carolina and Tennesee.

I'm in far north central MD, and we are, and have been, for several years in the area of densest concentration.

Back in '01, a close friend contracted Lyme while on my property, and required ER treatment for a secondary infection, with a fever of 105F, requiring an ice bath.

And just within the last week, I saw (simultaneously), a new all time high count of 22 white tail deer, a vector in the life cycle of the tick, within 100 yards of my house.

I've notified the Dept. of Natural Resources to see if there is any legal way to "remove" them from my property.

The ticks carry the spirochete, which actually causes the illness, at all stages of their life cycle, and they are active at any temp. above 40F

We've had a very mild winter so far, so the dormant period here this winter was barely 2 weeks long in mid December.

We should be worrying a lot more about this regional plague, which is fully established, rather than the theoretical threat of avian flu.

Wow, talk about Off Topic. LOL

Regards.

Bob

I don't think that any of the major grading companies would "intentionally" provide a numerical grade for an OJ with the ad trimmed off the bottom. I've seen one, I'm sure it was a mistake. I haven't seen any OJs encapsulated with an AUTHENTIC label with the ad trimeed off. This isn't to say that this couldn't happen. You'd have to check with the grading companies for their policy on this subject.
