Early bat?

Hi-
I apologize in advance if the bat scanned below is just some 1930s or later child's bat that is better used for firewood then kept for a collection (that is my current assumption). I did not pay much for it (a dollar) but it struck me because of the knob and the appearence of a flat part of the barrel (I tried to scan it below). Could any one please help me with the following questions?
1. Approximately how old is this bat?
2. What are the telling signs?
3. Is this a child's model?
4. What is the purpose of the flat side of the barrel?
5. Any other information would be greatly appreciated.
