Default Back again with photo and needing help with ID

Here is where I am - thanks to the help from the site in 2017, I am pretty sure this is a picture of a Duluth Dukes player. Given the frame it is in I presume from the 1930's-40's. I can not make out enough to even suggest the site of the picture. I can not find pictures of individual Duluth Dukes pictures from this era. I looked at Major League players who played with the Dukes but there are not enough pictures to make any kind of an ID. I guess this guy will remain a mystery and someone will find it in my collection and wonder the same thing and why I have it. Many on this site helped me get this far but, maybe some of the members who have joined in the past couple years will recognize him.

I just happened to look at the backing in the frame and it was this. Doesn't help me much but maybe someone will be able to tie the two together.

Here's an article that mentions a bus crash that killed 4 Duluth Dukes in 1948. But I think it's earlier, based on the sun collar. There's a lot of Dukes' history in the article ...

Here's a photo of three Dukes from 1939. The jersey looks very close. I see rosters are available online for Duluth teams of this era, so maybe that could help.

Chris,

Thanks for the two replies. I am saving the article and will research some more on the 1939 Duluth Dukes. I appreciate the help. Maybe get it solved yet.

Those 3 photos look like postcards. I wonder how many are in a set, and does a set exist? That or a team photo from the era would help. Your guy is definitely a Duke, and I would guess around 1940. I would check with a Minnesota collector. I think there's one here on Net54. Check out the long thread in the memorabilia section on Millers/Saints stuff.

Chris,

Thanks, I will. I spent a couple hours searching for data on the Duluth Dukes but could only find a picture of Jack Combs.

Thanks again.

Jim

There isn’t a whole lot out there pertaining to the Dukes. I collect it and it is tough to find. The collection I have attached is a very comprehensive photo collection in the Duluth area. They may be able to help, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Most of the early programs for the Dukes are very basic with no photos and there are very few of those to be had.

Take a look at this link. Wade Stadium was built in 1940 and the team used to play at Athletic Park prior to this. I used to play baseball in Wade Stadium when I was younger and I believe this is probably from Athletic Park which obviously makes it pre 1940. You can see the train tracks in the background and a smaller seating area. Wade also had a brick wall around it which your photo doesn’t appear to include. I’ll see if I have a program from 1939. They were a Cardinals affiliate at that time period.

Thanks. I did. I found out about their affiliation with the Cardinals while doing my search and was thinking about contacting them to see if they had any history.

Here is an example of a program from 1945 and although many programs during the war time had little content, adding that to the Class D league, there was very little content and not even a roster.

I don’t have this scorecard, but I’d like to. This looks like it would go a long way to identifying your player.

I had seen this during my search and tried to blow it up to compare uniforms but it wasn't clear enough. Thanks.

I have reached out to them and the lady, in her reply, said she was sending my query to the right person. Will post if I hear anything.
