Default How Tall Were the Shorties?

Have an obsession with reading the bios on the back of the cards. Sometimes I even compare the info of players from one year with another year. Most of the time they’re consistent.

However, for two of the shortest players of the game, Albie Pearson and Freddie Patek, I was bemused by their listed heights. The more egregious of the two has Patek coming in at 5’6” on his rookie card, and shrinking down to 5’4” on his 1975 card (he also loses 5 lbs, but I digress).

Good ‘ole Albie fares a little better, as he only loses 1’ from his 1959 RC (but loses a whopping 19 lbs) by the time 1966 rolls around!

Anyone else find such discrepancies during your years of collecting?

I noticed that a lot of the random bios I looked at for the T206 thread, showed players in the 5'5" to 5'6" range. Keeler was 5'4", Maranville 5'5", Hack Wilson 5'6"... I know the New York Giants got their name because many of the players on the team were over 6', which was very tall back then. I went for a check-up the other day, and the nurse said I was 5'9 1/2". In high school, I was 5'11".

Played some semi pro ball in the ‘70’s. I was 5’10” 195. I was average then, even for pros. Went to see a professional game in the mid ‘80’s. I was blown away by the average size. These guys were 6’2” 235+. Granted it was the steroids era but still. Their shoulders were 6’ across.
