Unless a proof card comes from Topps vault or differs in some manner from the actually issued card I think it is virtually impossible to distinguish a proof card from just a blank back card, of which there are many

Agreed; just a standard blank back. And not pre-war...

Proof?
I had always gone with the usual cardboard color backs as a blank back and true proofs as having a solid white back...... although I know this isnt 100% true its a start.
