A couple of times recently I was tracking a package from UPS on their app and received a message “Package transferred to post office”. Has this always been a thing where UPS basically delivers something to your local post office who then actually delivers it? Never heard of this before.

Its called UPS SurePost. UPS handles package as normal until it gets to your local hub, then packages are delivered to your post office and they do the final delivery. Its a cheaper option.
