Probably a bit late to the party, but how many others have had luck working on getting the 1986 Topps baseball set autographed?
I've just started, focusing on getting cards signed through-the-mail, and picking up signed cards for deceased players off of ebay. So far this week I got these back in the mail: ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice set to get signed.
I'm currently (slowly) working on a 1978T (384/726) and 1984D (229/660).

Nice set for signatures! The tough ones are Ramon Romero, Joe Desa and Doug Flynn I believe.
The checklists are good for players who appeared in a 1985 game but did not have card, or umpires, announcers etc. Working on the 1975 Topps Baseball set, I have 634 of the 660 cards signed so far including the checklists. Was thinking of doing the 1985 set if I complete the 75 set. |

I want to do an 86 auto set so bad. I did a ‘76 set ( the first set for wfh b I bought packs) and it was a blast. Was thinking of doing 10 year bookends…86 and 66

Yeah, '86 was my first pack year. But already there's like 100 cards in the set of deceased players, and in the short time I started this project, we lost another two. (I think my letter TTM was about 2 weeks too late for Ryne Sandberg...)

Add Terry Forster, Roy Lee Jackson, Kelvin Chapman and Luis Sanchez to the list of very tough to obtain players in this set.

Flynn hasn't been tough on this card for several years; rather, he's just expensive. He'll sign it for a large donation which goes to his church or charity. I want to say the fee is $400. Kevin T. can chime in here.

And if you're also doing the Traded set, Forster is double trouble.

Regarding Ramon Romero on that particular card, do not be lulled to sleep if you see one in a TPA slab. The TPAs have proven their lack of knowledge on this autograph one more than once. I've only seen a couple examples of the 1986 Topps which appeared authentic to me; at the time, neither had been authenticated by anyone.
Also, beware of the Luis Sanchez. To this day, I have only seen one example of the '86T Sanchez which I felt was authentic, and it was raw as well. Remember: slabs < actual knowledge. Do your research even if something is slabbed. A handful of years ago, a Venezuelan forger pumped several fakes of tough Venezuelan players' cards into the marketplace. Included among them was that Sanchez card. Extra scrutiny is required if you encounter any very tough signed card of a Venezuelan player. This forger mixed in his wares with authentic, lesser valued signed cards. The material was being sold cheaply and several collectors and dealers fell prey. Extreme caution needs to be exercised with these two cards. Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; 08-01-2025 at 08:46 AM. |

Alan Wiggins is another tougher to obtain card in this set, though not as difficult as those already mentioned.

Underrated set. I have always liked it.
I was able to get 78 signed TTM between 2017 and 2020, including Ryno. Had to go to eBay for The Cobra. Your TTM campaign may stall-out at about 250. |

Is Luis Sanchez tough in all sets or just the 86 Topps set?

Just the 86. He last played in the US in 1985, then went to Japan for a couple years before retiring back to Venezuela.
