Have never seen another copy of this. PSA Type 1.

Can you clarify a bit of info on it?

The back of the photo reads:

On mound at Comiskey Park, Chicago
appearing for first time
one mound for leveland Indians"

- Paige's MLB debut was in relief at home against the Browns on 7/9.
- His first start was at home against Washintgon on 8/3
- His first appearance against Chicago (at Comiskey) was 8/13. That game had 51,013 fans according to Baseball Reference.

Is the latter the game that you assume this photo is from? (That would be my leaning as well, but it would not be his first MLB start and would not be from July, but from August.

It's August. Thanks for pointing out. Here's the write up when I originally bought it. This suggests (incorrectly?) that this was his first start.


Description: For his first month with Cleveland, Satchel Paige generally pitched between 2 and 4 relief innings per outing. But on August 13th against the White Sox, Paige got the start and went the distance, giving up just 5 hits in a complete game shutout. At 42 years old!

Presented is the ultimate mound shot from that game, taken from a dugout perspective by esteemed Elmhurst-based photographer Bill Loughman. The ground-level camera angle provides an artistic touch, with Paige perfectly centered against the grandstand beyond. Both from side to side and top to bottom, Loughman's lens brings balance and symmetry. There is also strong image clarity as well as dramatic contrast between the brightly lit-up foreground of Paige and the more muted crowd background.

Penciled editorial notations on the reverse read, "Satchel Paige / 1948 / On mound at Comiskey Park, Chicago appearing for first time on mound for Cleveland Indians." This was Paige's 1st game in Chicago and 11th game total.
