Willie Mays Auction vs Son's Wishes

I thought about putting this in water cooler, but thought it was interesting enough for the main page. Sorry if you disagree.

Free article. It is an interview with Mays' son, who says he disagrees with some items up for auction - including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But he has no rights over the items, they are held by the Say Hey Foundation.

This is an unfortunate one, but if Mays' estate planning (I assume he made his wishes clear in a properly drafted and administered estate plan) can be undone after his death by the wishes of his son, that would set a massively bad precedent and have negative implications for estate planning for the public at large.

I don't think I care too much about any of the memorabilia. But I was shocked that the Presidential Medal of Freedom would be auctioned. I guess it doesn't have the same laws forbidding sales like a purple heart or Medal of Honor.

I remember Conway Twitty died without a will, or at least a good one. It turned into a nasty estate fight. I believe a judge finally just auctioned everything.

I feel for the son. It doesn't sound like he wants to financially benefit himself from any of this, he just wants certain items to be displayed prominently in various museums in memory of his father.

I think he's resigned himself to "It is, what it is" and there's not much he can do about it, so all that's left is to possibly sway the people in charge of this thing emotionally or with a certain level of public pressure.

He's shooting his shot, I guess.

Reading the article, it doesn't seem like any type of legal precedent is even being attempted here. Just a certain level of public persuasion as a last ditch effort by a direct descendant.

No implications on the public at large whatsoever.

Pretty broad statement that would apply to literally everybody on the planet...some more then others...but sure...I guess....

I don't think there's any bad guys or good guys in any of this. Just a complex issue to be processed by the various parties in their own ways. All driven by their own individual agendas.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom given to Jesse Owens was auctioned by the family so it is possible under certain circumstances it seems. Probably because it is a not a military honor but one given to a private citizen. A Purple Heart or Medal of Honor are both military honors and I believe they can not be sold or auctioned.
