Default Seller's reaction on ebay- that E94 Cobb

Posted By: Bob

I recently emailed the seller of the E94 Cobb and asked him about the card. I mentioned to him that the card appeared to be orangish rather than the gold color normally seen and was the color a result of a scanner or was that the actual color. (I have seen some reprints of E94s which look orangish, much like the orange color backgrounds of the E98 set, although I didn't mention it to him). I also asked him if I won the card, would he guarantee authenticity? I planned on shipping it to SGC to grade and I told him any grade, even an "authentic" grade would be acceptable.
Well, I received a terse note which said he didn't see the word "reprint" anywhere on it so it was fine. He said a couple of local dealers in his area said they thought it looked ok too. If I bought it, to paraphrase his reply, I was stuck with it, even if SGC said it was a reproduction.
Gee, that really inspires confidence, doesn't it?
If it had been a $25 card, maybe my inquiry could be construed to have been too probing, but I figure this is a 4 figure card...

he says 3 day money back guarantee...Bob...doesn't that inspire confidence? Card looks ok to me...but you're more of an e94 connoisseur than me.

Auction was ended and then relisted with a BIN of $1500. If I was certain it was real then I hit the BIN, but I'm staying away on this one!

Looks real to me, but hey, I'm no PSA.

The "orange" might be from the scan. If it's indeed orange I think this is card is quite unique. If it's yellow, well, that's great too.

I guess the real question is: Does the seller actually possess the card?

For someone that mean-spirited, he sure wished another seller to show compassion (see his third feedback) What a schmuck. Incidentally, I know little about that set, but that thing shouts counterfeit. Steve F

Well what do you know, I was right.

first auction found at garage sale

second auction he considers it an original!

third auction

Trevor - I think the camera just reset since it is January 1st, and the earlier picture shows the proper date. He may have it and it may be real, but I don't want to deal with this guy.

Besides being offered by a clueless seller...... Creases dont look right to me the surface should crack a little and show some white somewhere along the crease (I would think). The blue tint to Cobbs picture, the background color being blotchy, and caption is strange looking too. I would not buy it for $100, let alone $1500. But thats just me I dont like chances too much.

Check out the crease, background, image quality, etc. on this card at Pete Calderon's site.
http://www.caramel-cards.com/Albums/pages/e94cobb_jpg.htm

The funny thing I just notices when looking a the photo of the eBay Cobb, is look just above the second quote (") right after "TY", the sweater looks to be colored differently than on other authentic cards.....very strange.

Frank.....I thought same thing. Looks more like creases on a reprint card that has more waxier surfaces. Creases on real E and T cards will break the paper more.

That is a fake of Pete's card. Looking at the back. I see many of the same spots in the exact loccation as on Pete's card. Look to the right of Grant's name at that dark spot. It is on both cards. Look at the name Dougherty. Let's make this educational. Can you spot other spots, missing text etc. common to both cards. There are many.

Ha ha you nailed it Mark. Good job! I was too busy trying to tell if it was a reprint and wasnt even thinking it was a homemade one.

I did do a search on E94 reprints and did notice I cant seem to find any true reprints for this set.

So that explains the blue tint and blotchyness to the picture, just a bad inkjet printer (like mine). I see all the signs now, the white marks next to Cobbs right shoulder, damage near the 3rd button down, slight registration shift of the yellow at bottom edge, stains on the back all line up perfectly.

Frank,

I've never seen an E94 reprint.

Mark,

I'm pretty sure it's not Pete's card/scan since he was bidding on it last time the seller had it up.

Robert- You've never seen an E94 reprint? I have seen several. Frank is right, all E94 reprints are homemade jobs there has never been an E94 reprint set. There are so few E94s for sale and most of them are slabbed so you probably see very few raw ones and most of them (not all) are legit. Hammered, but legit.
tb
P.S. Look above the word "TY" on this card and Pete's. Notice the difference? Hint: Check the bottom edge of the sweater in each picture.

Bob,

To be honest, I don't recall seeing a reprint of any candy card that looked even close to the real thing. I know I've never seen an e94 that looked authentic and then ended up being real.

There is something rather...stinky shall we say....about this auction in general.

I think E95 is the only reprinted caramel set I recall ever seeing. I don't really go looking for them though.

Are raised wrinkles an indication of something else?

The scan of the back is definitely not a reprint.

It's Pete's scan with those cheesy looking creases doctored over it.

There is no e94 reprint with that authentic looking back.
This guy is pure criminal.

What are the chances that two gold E94 Cobbs would both have the last letter, the "l" in National in the line "Bates Philadelphia National" be missing? In the words of McCreedy, the leader of the Royal Rooters, "'Nuff Sed."

Ok guys this card this guy sold is a TOTAL fake and in fact a stolen scan from Pete. Look at the staining pattern on the back. The exact same to the dot!!! The guy is selling a reprint.

Sorry you guys already said that I see this guy is not getting paid off and relisted it again.

At first I think he really didnt know it was fake. Originally he didnt know what set the card was from, then he was sort of greedy (relisting it with a reserve) when he found out it had a high book of $9,000+. Most scammers dont end auctions early to relist higher. By the 3rd auction (or was it the 4th) I think he knew it was a fake, and he then listed it in a 3 day auction with a $1,500 BIN.

When I first started thinking about going after this card but had questions as to authenticity, I emailed a very noted caramel card collector and asked him his opinion about the validity of this card and the guy, who knows more about caramel cards than anyone, said unequivocally that it was without a doubt ok and authentic. Just goes to show with these doggone reprints, fakes and reproductions that even the experts can be fooled sometimes.

Again, I believe this shows that even though there aren't all that many fake E94s floating around (not that many E94s that are real either), if a scammer gets wind of a particular card being high priced, look out.
