November Pickups
WooHoo! I get to start another monthly pickup thread.
I just got what ranks as one of my favorite photos. 1934 Original photo. Full 8x10 size. Last photo is a description and identification of the photo.

Mark Great photo pickup as always! These pickups arrived today and kept me out of the Kreindler sweepstakes this time around. The first item I am pretty excited about. It is an unusual scale model of Three Rivers Stadium. I have never seen one of these before. On the bottom is a copyright date of 1971 with the name of A.J. Di Giacobbe Jr. I looked up that name and discovered that he was a developer /realtor in Pittsburgh. The model is roughly 4.5 inches in diameter and about two inches tall. It is very light weight and fragile. Due to its construction I am having difficulty believing that it was released commercially as a souvenir. I think it may be an architectural model? Then again the text on the infield would seem to argue against that hypothesis. If anyone else has ever encountered one of these let me know. I would love to know its origin.
My second pickup are ticket stubs related to the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise records set by Willie Stargell. Lenny of Mookie's Tickets & Sports Memorabilia helped me obtain them. I spoke with him earlier today and I think I am going to make a run at attempting to obtain a ticket for every home and away regular season game played by the Pirates in 1971. I completed the post season games recently. I don’t know if it is even possible but it will be interesting trying to do so. If you can help me out with a stub or two let me know what you have. Has anyone else here attempted to do this with another team? |

Nice pickups for you too! Certainly others have attempted to collect tickets to special franchise seasons. I collect home game season tickets to the California Angels first season in Anaheim- 1966. This is where I attended some of my 1st ML baseball games. I am far from completing this, but it's fun like working on completing a jigsaw puzzle. Andy Fogel, which arguably has the greatest Mets collection, collects tickets related to the Mets championship years. Lenny Steren, who you just purchased the Stargell milestone tickets from, collects 1986 Mets tickets. These are just a few collectors that I know do this, FWIW. Good luck if you attempt to do this. I will look to see if I have any dates that might help. Another thought is to only collect the Pirates home and road wins from the 1971 year. Food 4 thought.... |

Mike and Scott,
Thanks for the kind words. Mike, Nice pickups yourself as well. I have from time to time entertained the thought of doing some sort of ticket thing with Gehrig, but it just never seemed as exciting as the other stuff, like photos. Maybe one day.

Some photos came in:
1961 AP library of Oscar Robertson: My 2nd Minnesota Pipers Connie Hawkins team issue: 1971 Milwaukee team issue Jabbar: 1971-72 Pittsburgh Condors team issue George Carter: 1974 Portland team issue Walton, used on his rookie card: This shot shows Jake La Motta looking at a photo of the Cerdan family as he supposedly learned of the death of Marcel Cerdan, his opponent in a title fight on his way to the US for a rematch when his plane went down. 1962 Griffith-Dupas tale of the tape. Griffith retained his title by 15 round decision: 1973 AP of big George Foreman:

Mark, I am running out of things to hunt for my 1971 Bucs collection. Unfortunately, much to my wife's relief, and my great dismay, there isn't a lot out there related to this team I don't have. I like odd things that are different like the stadium model I just added. I already have all of the autographs, photos, and pennants from this team that I want. The game worn and used stuff is a bit too daunting for my budget at this time. The ticket stubs are a nice alternative. They should give me a goal to work toward and shouldn't break the bank like a Clemente bat or Stargell Jersey. A Clemente bank to pair with my Stargell would be nice but cost and scarcity make that unlikely as well for the foreseeable future.

More recent but I am trying to put together a run of stubs from Jose Bautista HR games. I need 51 2006-2011 (have all the stubs from home and road games 2012-2014. Had I started early it would have easier. With Lenny's help and and staying on Eaby and Craigslist I manage to pick up approx one ticket a month (not including new games in season). I may not get them all but it has been fun and affordable to try.

Congrats Mark, great photo! The fact that the Babe homered on that day doesn't hurt either! Very cool!

I've had this for a year, but finally repaired it. The jersey had about 20 moth holes in it - some quite big. I had it dry-cleaned, then scrubbed off various dirty areas that remained, using a hat sponge. Then used wonder-web and some similar-colored material to fill the moth holes. Finally, used wonder-web and dark blue felt to repair the lettering. If anyone ever attempts a project like this, please email me if you have questions - took quite a bit of work to figure it out.

That looks fantastic. Great job. With your work on this and the gloves, you are getting to be quite the restoration guru.

Me too but I don't see them extending an offer that will be competitive. I hate to see Russell leave but it makes no fiscal sense to compete for him. I doubt he gives us a home town discount at this point in his career.

Nate, I am always amazed when you post another load of items - I have a vision of a warehouse like the one at the end of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'.

A new endeavor for me. I don't have any experience with them but I liked this one. Has a little paint on it I was thinking about removing. Not sure how to do that if it is wise. And I don't know if the bat has value but I like it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If it is just little spots, you can flick them off with an x-acto knife (or carpet cutter). You can also rub just the spot, lightly, with the blade, and it will take off a little dust at a time. The next step after that would be to clean it and then seal it. If you think it looks unattractive as-is, and it's value isn't high (I don't know), then you can certainly restore it somewhat, very easily.

Jon,
I had my eye on that bat also. Can you tell if it is cracked? The paint splatters should come off if you rub them with denatured alchohol. |

It is not cracked. I'm gonna try the denatured alcohol and the exacto knife idea from earlier. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cleveland Indians season passes
Three different Cleveland Indians season passes, including World Championship season of 1920, issued to Mrs Guy Morton. Guy Morton pitched for the Indians from 1914 - 1924.
Assuming that the pass was also valid for the World Series, and that as the wife of one of the players, she would have attended, the 1920 pass was likely used to witness Bill Wambsgnass' unassisted triple play in Game 5. Interesting personal notations on the back of the 1924 pass show some income and expenses, such as 75 for Rent and 20 for Car. |
