1952 Topps -- Card Gallery
I've always wanted to see what other collectors / set builders have out there player by player. This has become increasing difficult to accomplish in person these days. Let's try to post a different 1952 Topps card each day so that we can share / view examples of our graded and non-graded gems. I'll start today off with card #188 Clarence Podbeilan. Let's see your copy! Someone else can pick a different card to share tomorrow.

52 Topps
Was hoping that each day we would focus on one card from the set and post each of our examples. Today woul be #188. Maybe that wasn't clear in my first post.

Seeing that Jansen #5 is out there...let's focus on that card tomorrow / Wednesday.

So, today only post Podbeilan cards and only post Jansen's tomorrow? Sort of like "whose is bigger?" lol

Ethan, here's mine.
I have a small cache of SGC graded 1952 Topps that I plan on cracking out sometime in the future, with the hopes of them crossing over for the PSA set that I recently started.

Shooting for well centered, VG cards. Despite PSA's opinion!

It's players like this that I know make some people reluctant to collect complete sets. Why spend money for a card of someone you have likely never heard of? However, it's something I always found interesting. When I was working on my run of Topps sets, there were many players from the 50s and 60s I never heard of who I found in 5 or more sets so they had to have been decent players to make it in the majors for that long (especially when there were only 20 teams) even if they never became household names.

While amassing my 52's, on many occasions, I'd come across a card/player who seemed to command a premium over another player so that got me researching as to why? Outside of the hard to find centered copies, variations, etc, it was fun to find out some of these players had real good careers and/or had some baseball history to them that I never knew about. That is a side to the collecting, outside of thinking only about the ROI, etc, that makes collecting so much fun.

Nice card, and although I can understand you wanting to show it, we are doing a card #1 through to #407 with each card posted in numeric order every day. Tomorrow will be card #24 Luke Easter if you have one? Enjoy the site.

A lot of what I hold near and dear about baseball I got from my dad, who was a HUGE baseball fan and a storehouse of stories, facts and figures. I remember my dad talking about Luke Easter, who he obviously liked, who "had a charismatic, bigger than life personality just like Babe Ruth".

The Huggins and Scott Super set, link to it in post 102 in this thread, lists two BB variants to this card, dark brown versus tan background. I have not yet found two distinct enough differences to add to my set. My BB has the same coloring as the one Jay posted above. Does anyone have a BB with different background coloring ?
I have found out the hard way that differences in color backgrounds in ebay scans can be deceptive ( not talking about intentional) and different when in hand Last edited by ALR-bishop; 02-07-2021 at 10:41 AM. |

Mel is on the Super Checklist. His black back can be found with and without a red streak in the brim of his cap. Jay and Dave each posted one above. These are both BBs

Also, zernial was a good looking guy. After his acting gig, he introduced a young woman to Joe DiMaggio. That's right, it was marilyn monroe
