April Pickups
How could it be the third of the month and no one has started a new pickup thread? Has the month started that slow for everyone?
Well... I'll start things then. Courtesy of ebay. This card is my 65th of the set of 96 autographed(see link to all of them below) If anyone has any others for sale that I need, please drop me a note. Mark

April Pickups
Some of my recent pickups:
Although I've had some very good pickups recently, this is my favorite of the last couple of years, mainly because it fits squarely in the focus of my collecting niche, the Philadelphia Eagles. It is a panoramic photograph of the 1934 Philadelphia Eagles. I have a 35 as well, the this 34 is much bigger and in much better shape. I still need to get it framed. Next, I recently picked up this group of early football tickets, etc. Included in the group is a small program for the 1899 Army Navy Football game, with 2 accompanying ticket stubs. The army navy game actually started in 1890 but up until 1894, the game was a home game for either army or navy. After a nasty incident in 1894, the Army Navy game was banned (the teams were only allowed to play home games). The game was restarted in 1899 as a neutral field game in Philadelphia. The other stubs are mostly Penn games between Harvard, Cornell, Lafayette, and Carlisle. |

Amd Carlton, you really have the nose to discover multiple high grade sports antiques. That's a fantastic Hagen signed photo. He had one of the great signatures in sports. Alright, I finally have a few new pick-ups to share. First off, a pair of high grade FULL Bottles of Ted Williams Moxie Soda along with an incredibly scarce Moxie carrying carton, and a superb large (6") companion piece 1950's Moxie Decal in NM/MT condition... moxierootbeerwithcarryingcase.jpgMoxieDecal.jpg Also was able to grab this nice pair of Mantle items. I got this 1968 Topps Baseball Posters empty box first and won the huge (10 x 18) matching poster a few days later. 1968TOPPSpostersBOX.jpg1968mantleposter.jpg |

Great stuff so far, guys!!
I won this glass negative last night in one of Legendary's eBay auctions: The image isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but I think it will make an excellent painting because of the story. The scene dates from August 14, 1929, and the Tigers are holding 'Charlie Gehringer Day' for their young second baseman. In the Charles Conlon book, Gehringer's persona is alluded to in an anecdote (which is later expounded upon on Wikipedia: "His unassuming nature is also reflected in his reaction to a "Charlie Gehringer Day" held by the Tigers in 1929. Fans from Gehringer’s hometown and throughout Detroit filled the stands for a 17-13 win over the Yankees. Gehringer handled 10 chances at second base, had four hits including a home run, and stole home. In a ceremony, the people of Fowlerville presented Gehringer with a set of golf clubs. Though the clubs were right-handed, and Gehringer was left-handed, Gehringer learned to golf right-handed rather than trade for a left-handed set of clubs." You'll see the bag of clubs towards the right of the image.

Joe Jackson bat
Just got this late teens era Joe Jackson decal bat. This Louisville Slugger model 40JJ is 36” long, completely original, un-cracked, and features a logo stamped on the knob that reads “Schmelzer’s Arms Co., KC, MO”. This is the longest Jackson decal bat that we’ve ever seen, remaining in excellent + condition, and boasting an awesome “Black Betsy” like finish and patina.

Another April pickup here...early 1900's Wright and Ditson crescent padded fielder's glove...soft, supple, large for its style, and featuring a pristine patch...an immediate new "favorite" in the collection.

Just arrived today
1927 World Series Type 1.
Pics are 4.5 x 7 and 4.5 x 6. They depict Lou Gehrig making a play at first base and Gehrig sliding into third. They were pasted in a scrap book. The black paper at the bottom of the second pic is from the scrapbook.

Picked up a late 1930s game used glove that belonged to Whitey Hilcher. 1931-36 Reds, and then a few years before the war in the PCL. Has part of his nameon the back were he stenciled it on.
Collecting Goldsmith equiptment, I filled a big gap by getting a Goldsmith brand glove that was game used. Here are some pics, cant wait for this one to arrive. |
