Default Winning bids from "The Never Ending Auction"?

Just thought it would be cool to see who was able to come out on top on their lots...and what they ended up with.

I got the Rogers Hornsby Hanna Batrite gamer as well as the Reggie Jackson 1980 gamer. Also got one of the T206 McGraw cards.

I would love to hear about the other winnings!

Happy New Year everyone!

Tom C

Default My big win from "the never ending auction"

I only purchased one item, but it matches my no-hitter collection nicely.

My pickup was a 1914 photo of the Cubs' Jim "Hippo" Vaughn from The Sporting News Photo Archive. Hippo Vaughn was the unfortunate losing pitcher in one of the most interesting no-hit games ever played. On May 2, 1917 Vaughn locked horns with the Cincinnati Reds' Big Fred Toney. Both Vaughn and Toney threw 9 innings of no-hit ball, which is the only time that this ever occured in history. In a pitching matchup for the ages, Vaughn finally surrendered a single with one out in the 10th and then allowed a second hit that surrendered the games only run. Toney completed a 10 inning no-hitter for the win.

I've previously posted pictures of a signed photo of Fred Toney and the only known full ticket to this game in existence that I own in my no-hit collection. This photo of Vaughn makes a nice complimenatary piece.

Nice photo and companion piece, Scott! But the "Hippo" monicker seems rather harsh He doesn't even look overweight to me. Wonder what they would have called David Wells or Sid Fernandez back then?

I'll post my winnings shortly... just have to download the pics.

Default Odd Baker Photo

Looks to be readying himself for a 50 yard dash against "Boardwalk" Brown.

And a nice photo of my favorite player from my youth.

I loved this auction. I had to tone it down because of Mastro earlier in the month, but came away with the following...

1. Donald Wingfield Original Photo - Iconic early shot of Mantle

2. Donald Wingfield - Great "Crossed Bats" shot of Mantle and Klu (wearing my favorite Uni of all-time)

3. Tony Perez early original pair of photos. The second one is an amazing companion piece for me, as it is the very subject on which my Dick Perez original Watercolor is based.

4. Cool pair of Willie Mays Sunglasses. Finally, I am high-bidder on these damn things (after half a dozen tries!) I contacted "Forum Buddy" Greg (SayHey) about this pair a couple of days after he had sold them to Dave Bushing. And in a roundabout way they finally made it to me

I picked up a nice Bubbles Hargrave 1928 photo for my St. Paul Saints collection.

Default "Hippo" Vaughn

Mark (Perezfan),
Thanks for the compliment on the Hippo Vaughn photo. You ended up with some dandy items yourself. Love the glasses and photos.

Your comment about the "Hippo" moniker made me think about how he got it to begin with, and I couldn't remember myself. I ended up pulling out my copy of SABR's 2004 great book "Deadball Stars of the National League" to see if there was anything in there. Sure enough, here you go:

Jim Vaughn was "a large man 6'4" and between 215 and 230 lbs., though reports indicate that his weight balooned to close to 300 lbs. late in his career" (shades of David Wells, Sid Fernandez and Mickey Lolich I would say, sure enough!), whose lumbering, side-to-side gait gave him the nickname "Hippo". There you go!

A cool side note:
By rereading the chapter in the book, I realized that the photo that they used in the chapter on "Hippo" Vaughn is the exact one that I just purchased in the Mears "never ending" auction!
