Default How old are members on our board?

With the recent, very good, thread on where the hobby is headed, I figure another "how old are you" poll is due. Our membership enrollment is down to around 80 per month right now. At first it was 50-60 (4 yrs ago), then it went up to 100 or more for a few years, but the last few months it's been around 80+. That is new registrants being manually approved by me. At any rate, I believe several years ago the average age on the board was around 45, but the last one the age went down to around 42-43. We shall see....FYI, I just turned 52......

im 44 5/12...and am unmarried pseudo social hermit...perhaps this explains something...although my cat has expressed an interest in my cards...but I don't think he could afford to buy any.

I am 59 years old.

My chosen moniker for Net 54 is "brian1961", based upon the spring of 1961 when I began collecting baseball cards with Post Cereal and first series Topps baseball. I was only 6 years old.

Mr. Ed : "It's been a long time since I was a pony."

Default children

I am more interested in how many children we all have...

interesting to see if many collectors here are unmarried hermits or actually family men....that may help determine the health of the hobby....when you have nobody to share/give your collection to, I think it will harm the hobby long term....

I have 3 young children...

Scott, my children have been hearing 'baseball' from every male in the family (and some females), since they were born. I have a picture of their first Christmas with my Dad trying to get my son interested in a baseball.

Nada. They do enjoy going to games with me, but that's the extent of their interest.

Wazoo, congratulations on being first to crack the under 20 list. Reminds me that while I was away at college, my younger brother about your age, sold my baseball cards (mostly 1962 - 70) to raise money to paint his car. Glad you are here.

I'm 43 and married (12 years) with three kids (boy-9, girl-7, girl-5).

The first year I actually bought cards with my own allowance money was 1977 Topps, as a 7-year-old. Loved those cards and still do. And I still have my originals from my childhood, although I've since built a couple high-grade sets of those '77s.

I'm amazed at how young this group is skewing, although I suppose there are some older guys who still don't do much on the internet. So much for the hobby aging out.

I thought the same thing Hank. It is quite refreshing to see the amount of young whipper snappers we have!! I guess the pessimists (see Peter U.) will find some way of saying something negative about it. Maybe there were hanging chads at the count or something.....

I'm not terribly surprised. All us guys in our 30's were the 8-12 year olds of the late 80's boom and got hooked hard. A lot of us have gotten into vintage because those were the cards we coveted as kids. It's our kids' generation where the the drop-off will happen, but the next 30 years should be sustainable, at least.

Spot on. Our kids' generation will be fine IMO, youth baseball is booming here in Tennessee, there's a wall of card packs at Toys R Us, displays at Walmart. Shoot, there's even a display at the Dollar Tree of packs for a buck apiece.

Absolutely 100% true for me. The biggest influence of having a few good local card shops for me was far less about what I bought there, and more about what I gazed at and came to covet. Once I was older and had money to spend, and eBay as a market place, I knew exactly what I wanted after all those years of dreaming.
