Best way to get PSA bump
I have a PSA 6 Willie Mays 1951 Bowman that I believe presents much closer to a 7. The centering is by far the biggest issue but I have found other 7s that have the same or even worse centering. My question to the PSA gurus is, what is the best way to submit for and actually receive a bump in grade?
This is a side by side (the 7 isn't mine so cameras/scanners are different but tried to make them as close to the same size as possible). Last edited by reversek; 04-13-2017 at 01:28 PM. |

I would definitely send this particular card for review in the holder even if I were not seeking a bump because, at least in this photo, the holder seems to be frosted all the way around, and I would want the peace of mind that it is real, or to know from PSA if it isn't.
I hope this thread ends with everyone laughing at me for raising a false alarm, but that level of frosting would greatly concern me. |

My scanner just doesn't take very clear pictures so used the one I took with my phone before I had it recased. Last edited by reversek; 04-13-2017 at 02:51 PM. |

I agree I wouldn't have the guts to crack it out. |

The last time I tried to reholder and review a card at PSA I was told they no longer offer that service. One or the other. This seems to defy logic as the best time to review a card would be when it is out of the old holder waiting to go into the new one.
As for your Mays, the 7 you compare to looks like a very old flip. It is widely believed that standards are tougher now especially on centering. I would not expect the card to bump. Your best chance at a bump is to crack and resubmit. That would be too risky for me on this type of card.

It certainly doesn't hurt to try other than submission and shipping fees. If you think it has a chance go for it. I would submit in the holder unless you really feel like gambling.

Others have already suggested that if you're going to send it back, then to submit in current holder b/c it's too risky not to; I would say submit it in the holder since it's the RIGHT thing to do. I've never agreed with the self-cracking game and never will. I think it's selfish and screwing up the hobby.

You can attach some extra cash and tape it to the back of the holder.

Attention: Make sure to attach the cash fee to the holder with the card you want bumped. Also on outside of package add ATTN Leroy. |

That 7 should have a OC designation.
Yours is slightly better than it, but be careful in wishful thinking, in return you get the bump, but may get the dreaded OC qualifier. So, ask for min.grade 6 with no qualifiers. Here is an example of one I had back a few yrs ago (from Goodwin):
