Undervalued & Underappreciated Hockey & Hoops Cards
Here's a nice 1948-49 Exhibits Card of George Mikan. A real undervalued card in my opinion when compared to his Bowman RC. Maybe some of the recent hobby love for Exhibit cards will rub off on this one? Post some other cards (Basketball or Hockey) you feel are undervalued or underappreciated.

1979 JD McCarthy Wayne Gretzky PC. When a Topps or OPC sells for thousands of dollars and is readily available by the dozens in beautiful shape, this RC seems like a great deal:
Echoes the under-appreciation of 1960s McCarthy issues from Detroit and Chicago teams: 1940s-1950s Canadian 'Exhibit' Cards. These were issued in Canada for vending machines in the late 40s/early 50s, have very early and very scarce cards of major HOFers, many of them years before comparable Topps or Parkhurst cards, yet they are very modestly priced by comparison: Then there are team issues. Talk about under-appreciated cards.

Looking at the pics above, and although I am biased, I would say the Beehive hockey cards are undervalued and underappreciated.
These have been around since the 30's so it is surprising they are not sought after more.

Most definitely underappreciated. Probably because of the size. Curious to know if these were sold in the U.S?
Anyway I've started my signed BeeHive collection with Glenn Hall. Every journey begins with the first step. uploadfromtaptalk1492263991338.jpg Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk |

Most listings on E-Bay are from CDN provinces, but I have seen American listings as well. Nice P/U with your Glen Hall. Mine are currently for sale/trade if you are interested? I have 245 of them in sheets and in binders.

I like these team issued postcards, rookie year Gretzky and one year before his rookie Roy.

Good call on the Roy postcard Peter, I forgot about that one. This one just popped up on ebay today so I grabbed it!

Moving off rookies, while I am not a big fan of the Icee Bear issue, I love this one, costs very little.

And here's a relatively obscure (perhaps for good reason though I like it a lot) Magic.

Leaders cards get no love. Between being oversize, the three all time greats, and the colors, for $30 I will take it.

The Test Orr RC is undervalued IMO, it's the '52 Mantle of hockey! Around 100 are believed to exist and a lot of them are really off-centered.

That's a great card. The thing about some of these oddball issues (not the test Orr, which is very valuable) is that sometimes, as a friend of mine says, the only thing lower than the supply is the demand. But ton the plus side as a collector there are many incredible pieces one can pick up at a fraction of what some widely-available, to my mind mediocre cards go for.

I well recall some years back when a gent placed an ad (either in here or SCD) and let it all hang out by stating he would pay something in the vicinity of $8,000 for a 1951/52 Royal Dessert Gordie Howe card. The "Royal Stars of Hockey" set, devoted to the Detroit Red Wings, had to be cut off the back of the product package. While the photos are black 'n white, they are nice head and shoulder shots---very well-rendered. Google the set if curious, but photos may not show up except by Googling individual players. Any Gordie Howe collector would "go white as a sheet" if they were proudly crowing to a competitor about their high-grade Parkie Howe rookie, then were quietly shown the competitor's Royal Gordie Howe. 'Nuf said, as per usual. ---Brian Powell |
