The tragedy of being a lifelong Mets fan
Found this lineup sheet over the weekend when I was packing some stuff up. I was 16 and it was a doubleheader at Shea. Me and a buddy snuck onto the press level somehow and I grabbed this off a table. Look at the Dodgers lineup as compared to the Mets. Sheesh. Not hard to guess who won this one.
Those were some lean years. (Sorry can't seem to get picture rotated.) Last edited by Snapolit1; 03-12-2018 at 09:06 AM. |

John Stearns was my favorite player after Seaver was traded, there really wasn't much else to root for.

The most inexplicable player in that line up to me was Stevie Henderson. Thought he had All Star potential but it never materialized. Great tools. I never remember him being injured but he never panned out. Was sort of like he just couldn't escape the bad juju of the Seaver trade. Seaver was traded for Henderson, Doug Flynn, Pat Zachery and WHO??? Outfielder who went no where fast. |

Steve Henderson had a great half season when he was first called but as you said never panned out. I have game used jerseys from 2 of the players in the Seaver trade (Pat Zachry and Dan Norman) |

If people went into the HOF based on flair and style Willie would be a first ballot guy.

Try being a Brewers fan. At least the Mets have won a World Series. Two, even. The Brewers haven't sniffed the Series since 1982.

I've watched a bunch of Spring games already and I am not liking what I am seeing. Pitching might be Ok if they stay healthy but this isn't a great hitting team.

I agree. Can't build runs. Nobody takes walks. No table setters. Can't just sit around waiting for Cespedes' next home run.

Brewers have an interesting team - i think they have a good shot at the wild card. If they can make a deal for a SP at the dead line maybe can make some noise in the playoffs.

I hope so. Their defense is improved with the additions of Yelich and Cain. Arcia and Cain should contend for Gold Gloves.
I think a lot depends on how well Jimmy Nelson bounces back when he's able to pitch again. Losing him really hurt. He was having a fantastic season.

Nelson was a huge loss - but should be back after all star break, but id bet they make a trade to land a pitcher if they are close - i think their line up is very solid.

The Mets did have a guy on that lineup that helped them win a World Series - Neil Allen. Traded by the Mets with Rick Owenby for Keith Hernandez in 1983. One of the worst trades in Cardinals history. But I do understand why Whitey did it. Of course Hernandez was a huge part of the Mets success in the mid to late '80s, including the '86 team.
