| This day in history - 9/24/21 - Ty Cobb goes crazy - show 'em!

9/24/1921 - Seething with rage over ball-strike and baserunning calls he felt had gone against him unfairly, Detroit player-manager Ty Cobb challenges umpire Billy Evans to a fistfight and the two go at it for over a half an hour under the stands at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Players from both clubs, along with a few fans and stadium workers, watch a no-holds-barred, bare-knuckle brawl with no rules, no referee and little decorum observed by Cobb, who fights like a wild man. It's finally broken up when Cobb smashes Evans' head into the cement floor, threatening to kill him. Evans never files a report, but AL president Ban Johnson suspends Cobb as a player for the balance of the year. |

I don't have a Cobb to show, but just wanted to say that I had never heard that story about Ty. I can't imagine what would happen to a player or manager doing something like that today! "Banned for life" comes to mind. Those were certainly different times.

I've never heard the story about Cobb fighting Evans. I'm bidding on the Cobb photos in tonight's Legendary auction, lots 1326 through 1409 make him appear like a friendly, easy going player. Did Cobb have some control over the media in those days? The two glass negatives look familiar. Does anyone know if a card was printed from either of these images: (Links) Lot 458 Lot 462 Last edited by TristanWingfield; 09-29-2009 at 07:53 AM. |

This story only goes to show what a wuss Cobb was (apologies to Lichtman). A no-holds-barred, bare-knuckle brawl that lasts for 30 minutes??? With Cobb fighting like a wild man? Have you ever seen or been in a no-holds-barred, bare-knuckle brawl? They don't last 30 minutes. In fact, without PCP, they don't even last 3 minutes. Unless it's a battle between two 3rd-grade girls. Ty Cobb: wild man fighter or 3rd-grade girl? One of baseball's great mysteries is finally solved! -Ryan |

I hope the answer is all of them. Amazing piece, real cards or not. I'd buy it if they were all reprints.

| Mike, Very impressive. If those are all real, I know how you can handle all future legal bills (assuming, of course, you ever get in BIG legal trouble.)! |

That is an incredible collage Mike. T206 Cobb back, D380 Clement Bread, Boston Garter, etc. all stored inside a picture frame. Everyone should break their cards out of their SGC holders and display their cards in a frame for all their guests to enjoy. |

If that were a print I would buy a copy in a second! Simply beautiful! If all of those are real, that has to be the #1 cobb collection hands down! |
