Help With Dick/Richie Allen Cards
I hope this is the right place for this. As the title suggests, I am working on a manuscript and need some help concerning Dick Allen's Topps cards. The controversy over Richie and Dick was genuine and I remember it well even as a teenager. What I would like to know is if he ever asked Topps to use Dick instead of Richie and if the request was refused. Though he detested "Richie," it adorned all his Phillies Topps cards; by 1970 when he started his strange odyssey, it became the nominally better "Rich," which was used from 1970-72 with the Cardinals, Dodgers and White Sox, respectively. Finally, by 1973, the card used "Dick," and for the balance of his career. I would be crushed to learn that Topps might have nixed his request for Dick, but I gotta ask the question. tks
