Fisk rookie question

As can be seen just from the first three cards here, the background color on this card appears to vary widely. Does anyone know if this is just a function of scan settings, or if in fact there are such dramatic differences? Thanks.

I have owned a few different ones and have seen that kind of variance before.

With a little looking you can find that in about every post war card. There are even a few people that will hunt out the biggest difference they can find and sell them as color variations at huge premiums.

I was tempted to buy that signed card for 100 obo. I'm Not familiar with the Fisk specifically but have seen a similar variance in other cards. Like the 75 brett.

You will see similar differences in the '85 Topps McGwire rookies, which vary from rich, deep color to slightly washed out in appearance. My theory has always been that they only re-inked so often, and as the print run proceeded, allowed the cards to become somewhat faded in appearance before they did so.

Note: I think the more richly, deeply colored examples will command a significant premium in the future.

The presses ink continuously, but the exact color mixed and the amount of ink can vary a lot. (as well as plate wetting, and how stuff dries depending on temp and humidity. )
