O.K., so I'm really pushing it, but the Nov. thread is getting rather large, and when this came in the mail today, it was like an early Christmas. Just the second one I've seen with an Old Mill back, and it doesn't just have a tape stain, it still has the tape stuck to it!

Here is a twist - how about a "Let it Go" thread?

A thread paying one last tribute to a card they liked but just parted with - maybe get a few matches with the pick-up threads.

I just parted with my nice 1948 Teddy PSA 7 to acquire a 1941 Foxx PSA 8 - alas, must make room for the new. Steve.

Jim Byrnes was born on Monday, January 5, 1880, in San Francisco, California. Byrnes was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 19, 1906, with the Philadelphia Athletics. Jim played 10 games as a catcher and that was it.

The sig looks like Tom but I checked out the full roster for the 06 Athletics and there is no Tom. So I'm stumped. Not even sure it's a teammate as he refers to "your" old teammates not "our". Guess it is one of those mysteries that will never be solved.

As an aside I am intrigued by the rounded corners. They don't appear to be wear as they are even on all four. All of the Sporting Life's I have seen have square corners.

A couple were won raw in Lew Lipset's recent auction
and the other, (Oleary) resided in a Gai-5 holder for
over a year before recently cracking and re-submitting
to Sgc.
I always thought it looked better than a 5 and was right.

That is an awesome National Caramel Heilmann card from what I believe is a very undervalued set right now. You probably see 5+ American Caramel cards for every National Caramel card and the current values don't seem to be a whole lot different in most cases with th epossible exception of the really big name stars.

The Duffy looks incredibly clear.

I'm pretty sure someone else on 54 has one, but I didn't think I'd ever find another. I don't think anyone really knows how many Henry Johnsons are out there - I'm trying to collect as many as I can find, or at least to find out where as many are as possible, but I had resigned myself to a Ruth being a dead end.

If you use the W575-1 checklist, like the Catalogs suggest, then there's also a Ruth "with bird" that was produced. However, I'm not aware of anyone actually having catalogued this set, so I have no idea if it was ever actually made available. I'm also unsure that these are actually W575-1s and not blank-backed E121s, and don't have enough of them yet to try and figure out which checklist should be used to find out how many cards are possible.

I'm obsessed with these silly cards, though, and owning both a Ruth and a Cobb has me really stoked.

Now all I need is to find a Johnson, an Alexander, a Ruth "bird", and about 165 others, and I'll have a whole set!

Thanks, Josh - it was an eBay purchase, actually - the auction closed Friday night. I don't have the card in hand, but I was too giddy about it and had to post it. Same with the Mayos.

the only cards I collect now are the t206s once owned by Howe McCormick, 500 W. Main St., Gainesville, Fla. This is the 27th I've been able to purchase since May 07. There are 9 others I know exist, but either missed on eBay before I began my focused collection, or belong to collectors who need an exact replacement before they will trade. Currently looking for Hindu backs on Schmidt and Killian (both throwing) to complete trades. If you or anyone has some with this stamp that you would be willing to part with, please let me know.

Dave, is that a row of paper loss across the top of the back of the card?

The Coombs is no doubt very nice. However, I dont think the grade is inappropriate - there is some minor paper loss in the middle of the card on the reverse and there appears to be a crease/wrinkle on the upper left side of the front. Paperloss + crease + rounded corners that are consistent with what you would see on a 40 level card will net you a 10 or 20 every time. If the card looked like this on the front and had minor paperloss, then I'd agree it was undergraded:

Josh is right...the paperloss on the Coombs is in the middle on the back, and then there is that slight crease near the top left border on the front. Probably accurately graded, but yes, I have seen 30's in the same shape. Either way I'm happy with it, tough card in the set.

In fact, although there may be slightly too much paperloss, I think the apparently ungraded Bridwell that Dave posted has a better shot at a 30 since it is crease free and has much sharper corners.
