Were Novelty Leader cards issued in vertical strips or horizontal strips? Or does no one really know?

Not sure if they were handcut but some of the edges look to be done very uniformly. These have been seen a million times but they still give us a few clues about how they were formed and cut...

I agree that these were machine cut.
The only borders that you ever see "uneven" were the top and bottom and those only on the ones missing the large top and bottom "borders". this would indicate that those exhibiting this were trimmed (probably because the cards looked odd with the huge white top and bottom borders)

Leon's bottom red card has borders broader than those possible if the Judge AUT print spacing applied to all cards in this set. Can we therefore conclude that some cards will typically occur with characteristic "broad" borders, while other images will always have narrow borders?
I've seen two Traynors both with similar broad borders.
