Kiki Cuyler pronunciation
I hate bringing old threads back to life, but I saw a post recently about the mispronunciation of Lajoie in the American Greed thread and then...during some research on Kiki Cuyler I came across his bio in SABR and my mind was blown.
Kiki Cuyler's nickname rhymes with "eye-eye" and his last name is more like "Kyler". So it's Kai Kai Kyler. All this time I thought it was "Key-Key Cooyler". How he got his nickname is described in the first paragraph of the link below. Awesome! https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/7107706b

It took me six months of living in the islands just to be able to pronounce the street names but eventually I was able to get my mouth around words like Anaehoomalu, Kaaawa, kamanawanaleia and da kine. The trick is to bust it up into syllables which isn't so difficult once you're familiar with some basic pattern recognition in Hawaiian words. Kee-hay ma-ha-na o Maui a-kay-o. Easy as pie. The Sardinha boys were local studs.

It's Gow-dy...Rhymes with Howdy.
It's Bo-Min...Like Bo Jackson I always pronounced Lajoie with 3 syllables...La-Juh-Way. But I've also always said Hoe-Nus...and the smart people seem to say Hah-nis.

"My girlfriend is named Lynn. She spells her name "Lynn". My old girlfriend's name is Lyn, too, but she spells it "Lyn". Every now and then I screw up, I call my new girlfriend by my old girlfriend's name, and she can tell because I don't say "n" as long."

This is good stuff. Being a collector since like forever, I have never even heard anyone pronounce it Goo-Dee until now. I have never thought twice that it could be anything other than Gow-Dee (like cow). Interesting though.
Just my two cents worth but I have also called Bowmans Bo-men pronounced like bow and arrow and Lajoie as Lazho-way. That American Greed pronunciation the other night threw me for a loop. Fun thread. JD |

great question. I always said "ho", but have heard many say "Hah". The narrator said "Ho" in the American Greed segment, but I hardly consider him an expert. What's the definitive answer on this??

Wagner was one of nine children. As a child, he was called Hans by his mother, which later evolved into Honus. "Hans" was also an alternate nickname during his major league career. So it appears that Hah-nus is the way to go. Last edited by CW; 08-27-2017 at 12:07 AM. |

I have been fairly certain, for a long time, that his name was pronounced HAH-niss. It's nice to see that theory gaining a little traction.

To rhyme or not to rhyme, that is the question
Good point. We're having a cook out today. Can't wait to try a Goo-dee on one of the burgers.
I bet I cough before I'm through, though it might even be too tough to chew.. And by the way, Hans, a bad kid, was his mom's onus, until he received his first bonus and became Honus.

Regarding Honus, I would imagine the audio of Glory of Their Times would shed some light on the matter...anyone care to share??

I knew several players who were friendly with Wagner during his coaching days. All called him "Hoe-nus". Interestingly, in spite of the total esteem in which he was held, not one man ever referred to him as "Mr. Wagner".

Actually, if you hover your mouse over the pronunciation portion of his name, it says the "o" is pronounced as in "body". Bah-dee, Hah-nus.
