Clemente & Mantle
At the Starlight Theatre. The seller says he got these autographs as an 11/12 year old in 1959/60. What do you all think?

He is a man of his word. Couple of beauties. Circa early 60s.

His timeline is also correct, as I would have pegged the Mantle at 1960 if he hadn't provided you with any info as to date. Mantle's autograph went through big transitions during this time, making it easier to pinpoint a year based on style alone.
What is really interesting, though, is that Clemente gave such a beautiful signature even in this in person situation. While his signature hadn't yet devolved into the latter-day stacked scrawl it became, it's still a much nicer example than he could have chosen to sign circa 1960. |

I'm curious how many other signatures are on there, as they signed so close together. I see Bill Monbouquette going through Mantle, so maybe the whole cover is full of autographs. What an event that must have been! To me, it makes it even more special, and almost surreal, to see two larger-than-life legends, Mantle and Clemente, sign that close to each other.

Thanks, Jeremy! This is awesome! I can make out Tony Taylor and Tom Borland (who had a very short MLB career), but my eyes aren't what they used to be to make out the others. I wonder what made these players see this play at the same time, as there isn't a connection I can see as far as being teammates or anything. But thank goodness that kid recognized who was there and got these signatures to commemorate the occasion!

The 1960 MLB All Star game was held in Kansas City on July 11.

Good spot, Jeff! And Monbouquette started that game. Borland was not an All-Star, but his Red Sox were in KC for a series that began after the break. I think this mix of players in that place at that time would tend to prove the authenticity of this piece even beyond how genuine the signatures look.

Nellie Fox and Whitey Ford to finish out the program. That is a gorgeous piece.
