Default A New All Time Record for a Sports Card

The SGC 9.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle has been topped.

This sold last night at Heritage.

What will break the record next?

Would you rather have that or a Wagner with a mansion to put it in?

I suspect the owner already has both.

Imagine thinking you really killed it with that purchase. I mean, it's basically a custom card with a couple patches and two signatures worth around $3,000 on their own. GREAT DEAL!

To be a halfway decent investment it has to gain about 1 million dollars a year in value .
I am guessing the owner isn't worried about it.

While the money would be nice, if this card wasn't valuable, the only issue I'd have in using it for toilet paper would be the chance of nasty paper cuts.

The fact that this thing sold for even a fraction of what it did...well, it certainly makes a person wonder about things, doesn't it?

Manufactured rarity can do you know what to my you know what.

The under bidder told himself “I’m not going a penny over $12,932,000”.

Uh huh….I don’t believe this is real.

Just incredibly fkked up that some dude can drop $9M on this fake piece of nonsense, and like 60% of the country couldn't come up with $400 tomorrow if they needed it for a major automobile repair. And probably upwards of 70% of people would be in financial ruin if a family member suffered a debilitating illness.

Don't know what to say. This economic disparity don't seen to bother a lot of people. All hail the great gd of capitalism.

Hilarious that people who buy other tiny pieces of paper for a fraction of their net worth are judging someone for doing the same. At least this one is signed by two of the greatest to ever do it. Modern isn’t for me either, but it’s not any different from what we do

I agree 100%. I know it pisses a lot of people off when they see something sell for so much more than anything in their possession and cannot see any value in the item that sold for so much - human nature, I guess.

As always unless something nefarious is happening - the market determines the price at the time of the sale.

If we didn't have modern collectors that are willing to spend money to collect, or invest, our hobby would end up just like stamp collecting - virtually worthless monetarily.

Oh, regarding the grade - I see so many people state "Buy the card, not the grade". That's what someone did in this case, yet someone posted it's only a 6. Damn, if it was a 10 it might have sold for $20M!

Congrats to the seller, buyer and Heritage!

Capitalism has worked well for many people for quite awhile. It's the American version of it over the last 40-50 years that is increasingly problematic, in that it's working well for fewer and fewer people. Many countries around the world have happier and healthier citizens due to their version of capitalism. Here in the US we seem to love the contrast of obscene wealth and abject poverty, with everyone in the middle fighting to stay afloat.

Yes, they are. Both players had plenty of game-used jerseys at the time. Logoman is the hobby nomenclature for the league patch of the sport, in this case the NBA logo patch.

The MLB logoman has the batter patch.

I was watching a video on YouTube the other day that said the modern card market bubble is about to burst. I guess this buyer doesn't believe it.

These modern cards selling for these insane prices, will not see these prices down the line. They just won't. It's today hype.

Kobe autographs are so over-hyped. Yes, I know he was only forty-one when he passed away, but he signed plenty of cards for Panini during his playing days. I see them popping up for sale all the time. They're not rare at all.

The thing I don't understand is that the winner could have bought a game used signed jersey from both of these players, something he could hang in his office and enjoy every day (I say he because no woman would do something this silly), and still have over $11 million left over. Maybe he has all these things already and the money meant nothing to him, who knows?
BTW, this is not an indictment of capitalism. If the buyer earned the money fairly he has a right to enjoy it in any manner he sees fit. He can support charities if he sees fit (he may do this too) but it should never be the governments job to make this decision for him.

It's amazing how that's been completely wiped from his history. Kids today probably don't even know that.

I remember the story about Bryant but had to do a search for the details. The case was dropped before it went to trial because the accuser was unwilling to testify. Bryant claimed what happened was consensual but the accuser claimed she was raped. A separate lawsuit she filed was settled without the details being made public. Lack of an actual trial probably helped make the story disappear from Bryant's overall persona.

Sorry Steve, that doesn't fit the Hero narrative, too much money to be made off of Bryant being a "good dude".

This sale is nothing but a positive for the long-term future outlook our collections:-).

It amazes me how some find negative in this who collect cards.

My business sense tells me to maximize profit, he shall cut the card in half to make a pair of serial-numbered parallels: .5/1.

Then sell only one of them 'cheaply,' for say $4 million (as a mere tease).

A rich guy, of course, will immediately buy it. DUH!

But here's the kicker: Offer to sell him the other half of 'his' card for $18 million, FIRM, so he can (solely) own the entire thing and not just a laughably measly portion of it.

The seller will have him over a barrel and many laughs (and soon many fancily-expensive vacations) will ensue.

Sorry, but simply put, it is stupid to pay that much money for that card. I don’t care how rich you are.

Maybe but it brings big publicity to our hobby… This is gonna be all over media tomorrow on your newsfeed. My point is this indirectly is in increasing the value of your collection, even though you may not see it that way. I try to find the positive in things.

Thank you, John, info much appreciated. And just for the record, with all the crazy shit going on these days, this hardly rates as anything more than mind-boggling. I'm a big fan of capitalism and achieving great wealth as a motivator, and those that do are certainly entitled to spend it any way they see fit. And let's face it, that's a great card, but really...

I'd rather have a signed MJ rookie and a signed Kobe rookie, if we are keeping it to those two players. I don't think much of cards that barely even show the players.

As far as the sale itself, meh, who cares? if it brings more interest and fresh blood (money) to the hobby, great. Let's bring them over to vintage and they can throw some fantastical amount of money at me. Otherwise, zero impact on my collecting.

Do the people bitching that other people have money to spend on cards plan to sell their collections and donate every penny to charity or, even better, give to the government? Or is it only when somebody else (not them!) has money to waste on cardboard pictures that it is a great wrong? It is always other people’s money and things they want to take to distribute as they see fit for the ‘greater good’, never their own.

This crap is almost as silly as thinking spending $12.9M on a card is silly because they picked the wrong cardboard picture.
