Default Allow me to introduce myself!

Hey all!

Well, I've already made a post, but figured I'd swing in and at least say hi and introduce myself!

My name is Justin. I'm based out of Traverse City, Michigan. I collected HOF baseball cards for roughly 15 years, until I got married, and the wife twisted my arm to sell them. It was the biggest mistake of my life (selling or getting married? You be the judge lol).

Freshly divorced (did you see that coming?), and I'm starting to get into collecting again.

However, my last collection was just like me...all over the place! People on other forums said I had one of the more diverse collections across the 4 major sports...but I don't know if that's a complement!

So I've decided to focus myself down a bit!

My focus right now (as long as random 1800s reprints don't take all my money) is to obtain a RC, auto, and relic of every HOF player. I'm focusing on baseball for now, but will eventually branch out to basketball and football too (sorry hockey, you have to wait!).

Obviously, that's going to be a bear, but what a better thing to keep my neurospicy brain occupied than an impossible challenge!

On top of the HOF collection, I am also attempting to collect Everett Scott (he's from my hometown), and Donie Bush (from my home state). For both players I want to track down as much of their card library as I can, as well as a signature (sigh...why theres next to no Scott autographs is beyond me lol) Because why focus on one difficult challenge when you can have 3!

I am eager to learn and work with you all. My preference has always been for pre-war cards, and now that I'm divorced and out of college I finally have the disposable income to start making that happens!

Who needs friends...or family...when you can have cardboard that can't leave?! lol

In all seriousness, glad to be here, thanks so much for letting me join!

I read the title of this thread, saw your user name, and instantly Mick Jagger was singing in my head: "Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste..."

I think you need to install a teleprompter in your head for your inner Mick Jagger...

EDIT: Dammit, you edited and my joke is no longer hilarious. Boo!

Nice intro. Welcome. I have a good working knowledge of T206. If you have any questions about that set you can send me a PM. Donie Bush has a nice looking and readily available T206 card that could be a cornerstone of your collection. But he has some other great cards too.

My subconscious mind generally improves the lyrics of songs.

For instance, Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" includes:

Didn't take too long 'fore I found out, what people mean my down and out.
Spent my money, took my car, started telling her friends she wants to be a star.
I don't know but I been told, a big-legged woman ain't got no soul.

In my improved version, that last line is: "I don't know but I been told, beetle-headed woman ain't got no soul."

We aren't to the point of pix lol. Most of my HOF rookies right now are guys that were rookies in the 80s/90s (anyone else feel old yet lol), so not really on brand for the forum.

If we are talking pre 1980s, so far I've got:

*Dennis Eckersley
*George Kell (I'll eventually upgrade it, it's got some paper loss on the back)
*Gaylord Perry (63 quad, I still want to get his 62 Topps)

My Everett Scott collection is only 1 or 2 cards. Frankly, after selling the bulk lot, now I can never remember off the top of my head what I have now or back then! lol.

Donie Bush I didn't know existed until I scored a T206 Polar Bear back in the lot that I got this past weekend for 80 bucks (including the possible 88 cabinet card which is look pretty much like a dud, but was worth the gamble. I uploaded a potato photo of the lot, even though most of them are well past the point of modern.). Started doing a deep dive on the guy and I liked his style, so here we are lol.

My phone takes potato quality images, as can be seen in my other thread about the possible 1888 cabinet card, but I'll get some if people really want to see lol.

If I may quote myself quoting a movie in a completely lame way to look more sophisticated...Ecce ad natandum cum mulieribus curvis cruribus

I'll do that. I got his Polar Bear back, that's how I found out about him.

I'm weird, I should probably (from a collecting value standpoint) upgrade eventually to a better condition one...this things a 1 AT BEST, can we grade a 0? lol.

I like my cards of a certain age like I like my ladies...looking worn! I don't want crisp, clean early 1900s cards. Give me some rounded corners and grime any day!

We all gotta start somewhere. I started with 80s and 90s cards too.

And I can't see it too well in the pictures but that cabinet card looks very cool (even if it's a reprint)...

Yep cabinet ended up being a reprint.

I do enjoy the newspaper clipping from beside it. Terrible photo quality to see it, but its a group of animals playing "America's Game". Came out of a December 1884 newspaper from New Jersey.

Welcome Justin!

Have fun working on your Everett Scott collection - here are a couple of his cards that are part of my pre-war White Sox type set:

Welcome to the board Justin! Wishing you lots of luck and enjoyment with your project. If you are looking for a Donie Bush auto, I have one that might be of interest. It’s a custom display card made by a very well respected member of the board. It combines a t206 card of Bush (one with a cool F Scott Fitzgerald stamp) and autograph below. Happy hunting.

sounds like a normal marriage to me. Glad your past it. it took me a good 10+ years to recover from mine but came back with a vengeance. My card collection saved me back then and now is a big source of pride and my wife is supportive. She knows it only benefits her in the long run,

When I got back into it in 2006 or so, it was the "less is more" mentality. Cards I always wanted but didn't have or couldnt afford were on the list. Some of them just now being checked off the list. Everyone finds their sweet spot. You'll find yours. Welcome and good luck on your journey.

Oh yeah this time I'm definitely trying to be more selective! I was a big wax breaker back then, so I had...literal millions of base cards that I'm sure my father dumped/burned when I went to college. Literally nothing of value. The big boys all got sold for pennies on the dollar when we urgently needed money (because of her terrible money management!).

Now I have adult money, and I'm just hoping I can keep my hamster on its wheel and focused on the major project (see my post from today for how I'm not keeping the hamster focused!).

There is one perk to collecting vintage and "old timey" players: there's very little need to bust wax, as odds are I won't hit anything I need for my collection.

I'll also say the folks collecting this stuff have been far more pleasant to deal with!

We are generally, definitely not always, a bit more mature crowd.

And welcome to the forum, belatedly. It looks like you have gotten your feet wet well so far.
If you are anything like a lot of us (definitely me) you won't stay too focused. I might recommend type card collecting. It goes well with being all over the place.

And most threads need more cards....so here is one. I don't collect signed cards but this was not much more than I would have paid for it without a signature.
