I know this is probably a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if anyone on the board has a sample from the 1922 Fan's Cigarette's set? These seem to be pretty mythical, but I was interested in seeing a posted picture of this type.

Lipset sold one for $11,000 in his April 2001 Auction. According to the text it was auctioned on March 1994 by Christies but went unnoticed and sold for $1,380. I can't post the picture - no scanner.

..would be a great price. I've never spent more than $500 on any card come to think of it, but wouldn't think twice in this instance. I thought there were only a couple cards actually known.

I believe there are only two cards known (Frank Baker and Carson Bigbee), and only a single sample of each one of these is known. So, it's not likely that you'll find one, unless the speculation that Leon owns them is correct.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has actually seen the Bigbe card. Until the Baker was discovered, there was only a photocopy of the Bigbe card floating around.

Like Andy said (and the SCD says) only the Baker card has been seen, plus a Xerox of Bigbee.

Don't know who owns the Baker, but its probably not Leon - he would have shared the image with us by now.

I don't have a T231 Fan's Cigarettes....there is a large cloud of controversy about this card, and the fact if it is "even" a card. I would also like to know who won the one in the Lipset auction as I have some ideas.....Before I would plunk down that kind of money for a card (10k or so) I would want some more verification of this series....as it seemed like other bidders did too....The opening bid was 10k in that auction and if I remember correctly it only had 1 bid ? regards all

I have never seen the card in person, so it should in no way be interpreted that I am offering an opinion on the card's authenticity yea or nae. Leon is right that there is not-so-public controversy surrounding the Baker card. And only adding to mystery, the card is currently owned by ... Lew Lipset. It was not actually sold in his auction.

The first listing for the T231 set in the ACC is in the 1953 edition:

T231 - Baseball Players, Fans cigts, sm. sepia, numb.

The value is placed at $0.10... more than a T206, but less than an Obak.
