George C. Miller cards

Hey Folks,
I am curious if anyone knows how the '33 George C. Miller cards were distributed? I have read all of the references I have and don't see anything about it except they are from Boston. Was it gum, candy, etc? regards all

I believe the Miller cards came with gum and the company was a competitor of Goudey's.

Those Depression-era companies were a stingy bunch: as is well-known now, US Caramel (another Boston company) and George Miller both issued sets that were virtually impossible to complete because they withheld one card, Lindstrom in the US Caramel set and Andrews in the Miller set. US Caramel made a practice of this "teaser" marketing - their 1932 Presidents set offered a box of chocolates to anyone who completed the set, but they made only a couple of McKinley. A complete set of these cards sold for over 10K in late 2000.

Nowadays, this kind of semi-fraud would wind up as complaints at the BBB and/or with state attorneys general... in those days, you had to lump it.

I can distinctly remember seeing a George Miller wrapper at some point that made reference to toffee.

I believe that there was an extensive article done in VCBC before.

Thanks guys....after Harry said something about a VCBC article I started scouring all of my issues...(only missing the elusive and ultra-scarce #7) and found it in #10...Gerald Glasser wrote an in depth article about them.....It was American Ball Game Toffee...and came in a wrapper, of which only one is known (they believe)...the reason I was asking is that I picked up a nice item to go on display with my type from the set...although not a wrapper it has the same colors as the cards...which I think is kind of cool....regards all (I paid a fair amount more than the opening bid for it....)

Unfortunately when in Rome I act like a Roman.....just like when Dan got one stopped, and then screwed , I have no problem with it being stopped AS LONG AS NO BIDS WERE PLACED.....I suggest being the first one to the punch as most of the board has participated in this type of activity....like it or not it happens.....best regards
