Mike...that really is a great plate...what's the whole scoop on it? when, where, how (much), etc...I like it because it's real...something that was made to be used, not just decorative....Glen Mechanick had a tooth pick holder, or maybe it was a creamer....at the 08' National, see below -Carlton
PS, what's with the tiger's head...is the plate from the Detroit Tigers??...from their dinning room?

Thanks Carlton. It was a Best offer request on ebay for $195 and the seller accepted my offer of $125. They arean't extremely scarce, but I love it. The players have laced jerseys and there is a Tigers head (no idea if it relates to Detroit). I'm also a sucker for anything with crossed bats. The plate is probably the most common piece from the set for obvious reasons.

Mike,
I was always told that they were for a Cuban team. I never handled one, so I don't have any personal insight, but it is a great display piece and pretty rare. Great pick up.

Mike, I don't know the origins, but that "S" should be a great help in trying to track it down. Great piece btw!



edited to add: after doing a little research there are not a lot of professional teams that have started with an "S" that used the Tiger as a mascot.



1915 Suffolk Tigers of the Virginia League

1965 Salamanca Tigers of the Mexican Central League

1966 Statesville Tigers of the Western Carolinas League



Judging by the looks of the plate it is older than the 1960s...you might be looking at a Suffolk Tigers plate? Does the plate have anything on the bottom of it?

I guess I should have looked sooner but I have a small dish from this set. The back maker didn't turn out real clear but it's from the Shenango Pottery Co. New Castle PA. It also has an impression of Shenango China New Castle Pa on the back. I guess the S may stand for Shenango. Here's a link to the company.

I picked up this pair of vintage football pennants; first a 1940s Green Bay Packers pennant, then the other is a circa 1910 West Denver pennant with a neat leather footall decoration. I am not sure if this is for a high school or college or something else, and I still need to research this one.

Picked up three "keybook" photos of Ronald Reagan as Grover Alexander in The Winning Team (1952). I don't know what "Keybook" photos mean, but they are attached to a piece of paper that came from a notebook marked "Page 31" with some other stuff written that I have no idea what it means...anyway they were used on the movie set or something.

Dan, those are some beautiful programs. I just love the creativity and artistry from the 1950s... such an imaginitive "golden" era for baseball memorabilia.

It's amazing how many versions of the Cardinal mascot exist.. and all are very cool in their own right. The Reds Mascot (Mr. Red) was so much more handsome in the '50s/'60s as well. Then, in 1969, they took away his mustache and turned him into a generic, mass-produced figure... always seen in the same exact pitching pose.

That mustache must have really offended someone in the front office... why they felt the need to "sterilize" their beloved mascot is beyond me. Not just the Reds either... all teams' logos and mascots became void of imagination by the '70s. I guess that's why so many of us are in love with the old stuff!

Great stuff as usual guys. I couldn't believe it when I saw these in a scrapbook today. Lots of great history online about this game including a near brawl at it's conclusion. This was the last game played in S.F. on a neutral field.

Hi Dan,

I work in Woodland, CA and every now and then I go into an antique store looking for buttons. Today I came across these. I guess this is why we keep hunting - every now and then we get lucky. Out of curiousity, what do you think they are worth to the right collector or even as an ebay auction? I really have not much of a feel for it but do know there are quite a few Cal/Stanford collectors out there.

Andy, I couldn't tell you an exact figure or really even a ballpark figure, but I do know and have seen memorabilia (programs/tickets) from Cal/Stanford games in that era bring big bucks. I used to search out early Cornhusker items from that era and preWWI Nebraska stuff is really tough.

The Daily Californian ranked this as the 7th greatest Big Game - not bad considering 100+ meetings. Heine Heitmuller was on this team and made a key punt block late in the game. He went on to play for the Phil. A's under Mack. Here he is in the middle with Joe Jackson. Pointless I know, but the internet is amazing!

Good looking program Frank...I bet that's a tough one. Now you need to find a 1921 New Orleans program with Dazzy Vance in it.

I picked this up from Regency Superior last month and just got it yesterday...It's a reproduction from 1997, but it was super cheap and framed already 48" x 15"...it's HUGE. The lot also had a smaller repro panorama of the White Sox (Fatima team photo).

I think your tickets are worth about $325 for the nice one and about $175 for the creased one. I sold a 1906 ticket a few years back that was nice and I think I got about $125 for it. Yours are earlier and tougher and that would be my estimate as someone who has seen some of these early tickets sell but not that exact year. Might be a touch more to the right person and maybe less in this economy, but you could expect to get about $500 for the pair I would think.

Dan, yes it is a Toots Shor menu. This one is in pretty good shape too. Not only is the picture great, but the other neat thing is checking out the menu prices from 1952. This is one of my favorite pickups.
