Grading strip cards and hand cut cards

There are no published standards for grading strip cards and hand cut cards. None of the grading companies have published acceptable standards for these cards. How does a strip card have to look and measure to be graded and slabbed? What is considered "trimmed" or unable to be graded? How does everyone feel about grading strip cards and hand cut cards? What do you think should be the set standards? What are your experiences with submitting strip cards for grading? I have been looking at a good number of these types of cards and I would like to find out just what the general opinion is in the hobby.
I see in the new SGC magazine, there is an ad picturing a 1959 Bazooka Mantle graded SGC 88. The card is hand cut and shows extra border. I know SGC also grades strip cards. Does PSA or GAI also grade these cards?

i think they should just slab them as authentic.

I believe that is what GAI does. They will slab but not assign a grade. I will contact them and find out.

There was a fairly long thread on this subject recently; anybody know how to post a link to it?

One point made was that the ones separated from their strips early tend to be rough, whereas the newly trimmed or separated ones look smoother, for grading purposes, but somehiow seem less authentic.

What if you had the chance to set the grading standards for a company like, say PSA or GAI, or whoever. What grading standards would you say have to be in place to grade strip cards and hand cut cards? Every card has to meet published size? They are only graded authentic?

One last question for now, what about ZeeNuts and other tab/coupon cards? I think couponless cards should be graded.

I did find bits and pieces in the search including some opinions, but what I was hoping to learn is what do collectors really want? It seems that the grading companies cannot define any standards for these types of cards. I am wondering what, if any standards collectors have as far as hand cut and strip card grading. I know there are a number of long time collectors of strip cards. I have talked with several sport and non-sport strip card collectors about the grading issue. The two opinions I get is that they should be slabbed as authentic only or I don't know.

Andy: I collect strip cards. It is my opinion that nobody has the right to second guess the kid who initially made the determination of how to cut the cards. They were his cards, and if he didn't want borders - well, it was his choice.

Who is a grading company to say that a kid from the twenties was wrong in his preferences? Or was "insufficiently" skilled with a pair of scissors.

This is a part of our Americana. Don't tread here.

My vote authentic only slabs for strip cards.

My further vote: please do not subject my cards to third party opinions of merit. Authentic only on all cards.

What is the reason most people say not to put a grade on these cards? Is a sheet cut up in the 21st century like a trimmed card. If so a grading company should not grade, send it back as trimmed.
