It seems to me that the Texas guys are seen slightly less often.

Sometimes there is a guide that has a slight premium for Perdue, Shaughnessy, or Stark. Hub Perdue was a character, and was on the 1914 Braves team at season's start. Shaughnessy was a manager and GM in the minors, a playoff system bears his name, he was a coach for the 1928 Tigers that had Gehringer and Heilmann. Dolly Stark in T206 is NOT the Dolly Stark umpire from the 30s. Monroe Randolph Stark played 4 seasons in the majors. Albert Stark, the umpire, was an infielder for Jersey City and Newark, which was as far as he advanced as a player. I'm not sure if a premium is justified for any of these 3, but it is sometimes seen. Maybe Stark deserves a slight bump for the Texas connection.

I'd like to see what fellow board mavens think about the Texas cards being slightly less plentiful.

There was another thread in or about 1/06 where a Board member kindly provided a list of the Top-20 or so Southerners, in order of scarcity. I did a quick search and came up empty, but it's out there somewhere.

I'm not sure that the Texas Leaguers are more difficult, but since they are not available with Hindu backs, there would theoretically be slightly fewer of them originally issued.

Are there any of the southern leaguers that I can not get with a sovereign back? It seems old mill was one of the main producers of these just by looking at what is avaliable for purchase. Did any member of this group go on to have an outstanding career or make the HOF?

Southerm Leaguer backs can only be Piedmont 350, Old Mill, and Hindu (exception: no Texas League Hindu).

As far as "famous" So. Lgrs. My two favorites are:

Shaughnessy, as noted above as a league aministrator. He came up with the 1 vs. 4; 2 vs. 3 playoff system. In fact, an arguement can be made his system is now used (in some form) in all sports. And Shag was way cool ....

"Smiling" Al Orth "The Curveless Wonder." Had his major league career prior to his So. Lgr. card. Had a career record of 203-182 in 15 years with Phil NL, Was AL, and NY AL. Best year 1906, 27-17 with Highlanders. Threw side/under arm, as shown on T206. Oh, and he had a career batting avg. of 273. Pretty inpressive.

Somewhat paradoxically, Texas leaguers are generally easier than the rest since, although they are not found with the Brown Hindu back, they were printed longer in the 350 series and are thus more prevalent with the Piedmont 350 back.

The New Orleans players seem to be tough as well. I have heard from several sources that many (Southern) collections took a beating in the recent, unfortunate hurricanes in the Gulf Coast.
