UO-Unc Schumacher Service Station- 1949

Pardon the slight off topic since these are really 1949, according to the guides, and not pre-war. I will give meself a break...Here is a card I just picked up and filled a scarce pre-1950 ( I digressed a little) regional spot..I have read the Big Book and Oldcardboard descriptions.... Burdick, in the ACC, described these types as:

"Oil and Gasoline Issues-
Cards and prints are among the varied items given out by filling stations to attract trade. ...... (and goes on to say) Theoretically one card was given with each purchase of gasonline, and many filling station operators adhered to this practice, but others permitted collectors to help themselves, more or less. Distribution was usually local in nature and no one person could obtain everything without extensive traveling..."


Does anyone know anything more about these, or have any/many in their collections?

Hi Leon, I saw that card and wanted it. But I spent my $$ on other stuff before it ended, so had to pass. I have only seen a couple of them on eBay, very rare.

Bill Heitman wrote an interesting article for the Trader Speaks which included a mention of this set. I have the issue somewhere, but looked around for it the other day and couldn't find it. It's in a file cabinet somewhere. Anyway I think the issue had a picture of Boston Garter cards on the front.

One day long ago, Oscar Schumacher was driving home after seeing a doctor in Aberdeen.

He ran out of gas on U.S. Highway 12, near its intersection with state Highway 45.

'I had a brand new car - a Pontiac. And the gas gauge was off. That's why I ran out of gas,' he explains.

Sitting there with an empty gas tank, he had time to think. Looking around, he said to himself, 'This would be a good place to build a gas station.'

Schumacher wound up spending a good part of his life at that intersection.

Schumacher, who lived in Faulkton at the time, began building a gas station and cafe in the fall of 1949. On May 1, 1950, he opened Craven Corner, named after the nearby town of Craven, which is now no longer on the map.

Baseball booster

In addition to his restaurant success, Schumacher is a member of the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame.

'He always had time for baseball - always,' says Val Hodson.

He sponsored and managed a Craven Corner team. 'We were in the state tournament several times. We had a good, sound ballclub,' says Schumacher, who still watches the Minnesota Twins 'every time they're on.'

Why does it matter if it's 1949 or 1950? I have a 1974 Gary Matthews PSA 9 in my collection. Cheers

No particular reason except a few years ago I made a decision to sell all of my post 1949 stuff. I only do scarce type cards from '45-'49....It's a focus thing ...until I change it again ........I might make an exception if it is 1950...btw, a cursory look at the catalogued cards, and players and years played, didn't reveal anything except it could be 1949-1950....take care and thanks again for the card
