OT-Passing of Vern Ruhle

I know he wasnt a vintage player but i just read about the passing of former major leaguer and longtime coach Vern Ruhle and remembered he was the 1st cousin of our own Jim Clarke.So i wanted to pass my condolences on to him and his family on the passing.

I know i still have tons of Vern Ruhle cards from the 80's in those ugly Astros uniforms

hey scott i saw a ryan howard limited edition rc on ebay over the summer for about $100(before he won the mvp). I was going to buy it when i got back from vacation but it was gone by then. Are there any ryan howard rc out there worth collecting and how much are they now. Signed Greg

Greg I'm sorry I don't know the first thing about modern cards and their discussion here is frowned upon. My suggestion is to try the Collector's Universe board. You will definitely get some help there.

I'm sorry i put a baseball card post in an obituary post! I probably new Vern better than 90% of the people on the forum being a long time phillies fan. And I sincerely do feel sorry about his passing. my apoligies greg

I went to Elementary School in Coleman, MI, which is where Verne grew up. His Mom and Dad lived about 2 miles from my hous at the time. In any case, Verne's cards were always in great demand with my collecting/trading Friends. Particularly the ones of him in a Tiger uniform. Coleman had a poplulation of around 700 people and he was definatley a home town hero.

I'm sorry to hear of his passing as well. He had some nice years in the MLB. It's always sad to hear familiar names from your childhood years collecting baseball cards passing away. My condolences to fellow member Jim as well.

Sad week in Coleman, Mi. My Uncle (Clarence Neilson) just passed away last week. Coleman is a very small town where everyone knows each other. Mike, where did you live in Coleman? I spent many Summers off Lewis rd. My Grandfather was the Principle in Coleman back in the 50's. Do you remember Cherry Lane? Vern was very popular with the players he coached over the last 10 years...

Myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer.

Vern Ruhle's 1981 Donruss card stirred a bit of a craze when it came out. It was an error card(Ken Forsch was pictured in stead of Ruhle) that was corrected about midway through the print run.

My Mom actually worked at Cherry Lane when I was a kid. My first full box of baseball cards was purchased at the Coleman Pharmacy in 1982. It was a brand new place at the time. Many other cards were purchased in Grocery racks at the supermarket outside of town.

We lived in two different houses in Coleman. One on Fike Rd. between Coleman Rd. and the road that went past the junk yard. The other house was on Barden Rd. which was also off of Coleman Rd on the opposite side of Coleman Rd. that Ruhle's lived on. I always got excited as a kid when we passed the Ruhle house with the "Ruhle" wooden side out by the road. Good memories.

Coleman is a very small town, but it sure did love baseball. I hope baseball is loved in Coleman as much now as it was back then. Since then, I have never lived in any area that has loved baseball as much.

Verne rule was a good pitching coach for the Phils. I remember him. Back when he was the coach the phils believed in changing managers and coaches not players in the offseason. that's why he did last a long time. i been a life long phils fan and it bad when someone that is part of the organization at anytime passes away.
