Slight deviation if I may -

I noticed most of net54'ers seem to, indeed, be set collectors. However, I am curious how many folks are non-set collectors, like me ?

The vintage material is so nice. I have a collection of no more than 40 cards - all in PSA or SGC - all major HOF'ers - all in EX 5 or better. No sets, just a great sampling of Matty's, Cobb's, W.Johnson's, Young's and a couple Wagner's.

I just can't get into the commons just to make sets. I realize building sets is a hobby mainstay, but to toss money after a bunch of commons - I would rather have the one nice Matty.

it's more a function of quantity over quality, and then of course, a favorite team, and a smaller budget.
I have been able to purchase about 30 cards in the PSA 3 or 4 range for the same money as one of the cards you mention.

Just a preference to be more active...but who knows, my tastes change all the time, so I may go your route some day...

I might add, that your more focused collecting is certainly more desirable from a storage standpoint...and I would of course, like to be able to afford that grade of card...but until then, I have narrowed my focus to Cubs team sets.

How do you choose what to go after (other than the 5 and above criteria)? a certain tier of HOFer? a team?

To address your commons question, my thought/hope is that if you focus your collection (like a team set), then perhaps there is the chance that someday the value of the group will be higher, since the commons are included. This of course, depends on 1)how difficult the commons are to acquire, and 2)how desirable/popular your focused collection/set actually is to the buying public...this could be flawed thinking, and perhaps you could always clear a better price as singles on Ebay, but maybe in some instances, there could be added value...?

Steve, I agree with you - though I still have a few sets filled with expensive commons, I have broken up at least one of mine in order to buy cards I actually carea bout. After selling 10 hard to get commons from my 1958 Topps set, I was able to buy a 1914 CJ Jackson in SGC 60. I'll take that trade anyday.

My favorite beautiful beater T206 set, is just missing 9 cards of the known T206 checklist.

My unplanned eye popping T206 set, just needs one more card from the known T206 checklist.

The T205 set is complete, as far as all the front cards are concerned.

Complete T201 set.

Complete T209 Type 1 set.

I have 219 different cards from the T209 Type II set.

At 76, most of my collecting years are behind me, but I'm toying with the idea of going after the T210 set.

What, am I crazy?

Is there a Head doctor in the house?

I am no big spender - the "big" auctions are out of my league. I focus on ebay and look for anything that intrigues me, within my reasonable budget of up to $2k. per card. But I may only make a 2-4 purchases a year, after a decade plus, there you go, 40 vintage beauties (to me).

When I need to satisfy my card urge on a small budget - well, thank goodness for quality Walter Payton's - just loved "sweetness."

I don't particularly consider myself a set collector for the very reasons you mention -
its hard for me to go after cards I would otherwise have no interest in.

Now for me, the T200s are the exception to the rule.....
I think that is the non-set-collectors set to collect.
Only 16 cards, and a HOFer or otherwise collectible player in just about every one.

i'm currently debating this very question now. i'm looking to rebuild my collection fron scratch after selling the last few cards 2 years ago.i'm on a limited budget so i'm debating buying only HOF's ,purchasing 3-5 cards a year or mix in some nicer "rare" commons such as those in some of the caramel sets.another option was starting to build a set...the reason i started this thread.my concern is the $$$ i use to buy a couple cheaper commons i could buy a nice "matty,cy or walter".i'm in no hurry to purchase so this is something i'll workout in time.

I'm about halfway into the Monster and plan on sticking with it. I'm a little over halfway into the E93 set, but have hit a lull. My restlessness led me to list my Wagner on 20-cent day; if it sells, I'll probably dump most of the rest of my Standard Caramels. That's a pretty typical pattern for me, actually. Building sets always sounds great, but I get too antsy and always end up finding something else I'd rather have.

I've completed the '57 Topps set and presently 10 cards into the 1933 Goudey set. But I don't consider myself a set builder, most of the time I simply try to buy key cards in key sets. For the most part that means HOFs but not necessarily. My motto is it's your money spend it the way you want.

Congratulations.
I've been following your T206 Quest, and you're doing great.
I would like to make a slight suggestion, if I may.
Take it from someone raised in Spanish Harlem during the '30's and '40's.
As a 10 year old in 1941, I would buy packs of gum from a candy store, with 1941 Play Ball cards inside.
Then I would flip them with other kids from my grade school near by.
Barry, in those days, I didn't know who Wagner or Cobb was.
In fact, I didn't know tobacco cards existed.
I got back into cards in 1982, and I started with collecting rookie cards. ... WRONG direction.
Wrong direction, because it was part of the investor/market/capitalization/stock market mind set.
That's not what I wanted. ... I already had a job, and I wanted a sublimation from it.
I decided to collect for the fun, and enjoyment of it.
Not ever thinking of what the card would fetch later.
It was a choice that I never regretted.
I kept my collecting hobby as a hobby, and not a portfolio.

As one collector to another.
Raise the bar just a wee bit.
Get rid of the 517 number

Back in 1941, I didn't know that I would own two almost complete T206 sets, and I agree with what you said about the Cobb back.

Raise the bar, and like that famous old ball player once said:
"ONENEVERKNOWS."

BTW, who did what to this thread?
I now need two plasma screens, side by side, in order to read it.

In Cy Young I have a PX7 domino disc PSA 4, T206 portrait PSA 5, and T206 glove shows PSA 5.

Finished a player set of D304s last year. Trying to complete a T3 set (91/100). Also collecting WWG Ice Kings (12/72). Am going to cool my jets on set collecting after that and focus on cherrypicking single cards I like for whatever reason.

Many,many thanks for the kind words and sage advice.
I have made myself singleminded about the T206 Grail and have found that parameters provide some comfort,e.g. the 517 figure.
This is probably the practical,professorial part of me.
The young little leaguer and pony leaguer part of me still knows as you
so aptly put it---OneNeverKnows. And this dreaming, imagining part of me
is what makes me look at those beautiful auction catalogues again and again,
taking an extra long look at the Plank or the Magie.
Thanks much for revivifying the imaginings tonight, Joe.
They're always around-- just sometimes governed a wee bit too much.
