W575-1 Question

Were W575-1 cards in vertical strips or horizontal strips? I always assumed they were vertical because that's the way the W573s were. But I recently picked up a W575-1 in beautiful shape, but with a slightly wavy right edge. So either mine is trimmed, or these were in horizontal strips.

vertical strips of 10 I believe. I have 2 10 card vertical W573 strips and I believe they were issued the same way.

I also have a theory that they (along with W501s) were also torn from some type of holder sort of like scotch tape. Many of the cards from these sets (especially W575-1B) have rough rips (some angled) on top, bottom, or both.

Rhetts page is the best place to view some (W575-1B), and I believe he also knows the most about these related sets.

I didn't realize there were two types of W575-1s. Mine seems to be the better quality photo stock.

I've seen the rip marks that you mention too, even on high grade cards. Your theory about that makes sense to me.

Paul, I kinda invented the W575-1A and W575-1B designations. The differences between the two types is VERY obvious when seen in person. The W575-1B's should probably be called W501-B, as they share the same checklist just without the errata at the top (as is seen on W501's).

The two different sets have been classified as W575-1 for so long and due to that fact the SCD listing for W575-1 is completely worthless, as it is a mix of two different sets.

I have been working on a an article about the whole E121 family of sets for a while now, and it may be nearing completion soon, I am just not sure how comrehensive I want it to end up being.

on the Miller cards blanked back, the position says c.f. on one of the carda and o.f. on another and the last type has the w501 type style on the front. And then there is the Koester variety.........

The Miller with C.F. designation would date to the same time as the E121 Series of 80 set (or earlier). The cards with O.F. designations date from the same time as the E121 Series of 120 sets (the producer changes all OF positions from R.F., C.F., & L.F. to O.F. and all bases from 1st B. to 1B., 2nd B. to 2B., and 3rd B. to 3B. in the later sets.

I have 2 blanked backed cards of Miller that have the C.F. designation on them. One was originally graded by PSA and called a Koester Bread. I cracked it out of it's holder as I like SGC holders better and SGC called them both 1922 W575-1 cards. Are these cards in actuality 1921 Koester bread cards? I have always wondered if SGC has these 2 cards labled incorrectly. I try to collect all the varieties of Miller possible and have currently 10 different styles.

actually, to rephrase my earlier question to Rhett, are all W575-1 cards made in 1922 or later dates, or were some W575-1 cards made in 1921 or before?

Paul, to answer your question, yes the checklists are very different.

Ken, the W575-1 (good quality) was pretty much produced throughout the run of the different sets 1921 and 1922. And actually most of the good quality W575-1 are from the earlier (around E121 series of 80) sets.

One last question - Is there any way to tell the difference between a high quality W575-1 and a Koester Bread card, if the Koester card doesn't have one of those caption peculiarities?
