How did everyone do in last night's auction. At least with the individual lots ending as they did, I was not forced to stay awake all night waiting for the auction to end.

Unfortunately, I struck out in my attemps to win any items. I was the underbidder on the two Negro League items that I went hard after, the 1927-28 Mallorequena Uncut Sheet & the Jud Wilson Auto P/C. It is very frustating when one-of-a-kind items finally come up for sale and you just don't have enough money to pick up something that you will ultimately need to acquire in order to complete your collection. I understand why many HOF RC collectors have recently gotten out of the market and/or changed their focus to something else. I know that I can't compete in a spending war with the few people that have seemingly unlimited resources but I will continue along with my collection and make smart pick-ups whenever possible.

Who knows what the future may bring?

I too was shut out. I was going after the d322's 24/25 and couldn't stomach the next bid. Good thing there are auctions closing Thurs, Fri, and Sat. Good luck to all...

I was skunked as well, I just can't stay up that late. There was one lot I would have gone higher on but I just can't leave ceiling bids any more after what Memory Lane and Festberg did to me in the past.

I actually have one lot that I am going for tonight, but it is probably going to reach far beyond my means. Currently I am high on one lot in REA, but I don't have too much faith inthat level.

I bought the Burke pics on a whim - just seemed really cool for araound $10 a pop. I'll have fun sorting through them and trading them. I have always wanted a t200 set - always seemed like bargains to me.

John - the Burke collection should indeed be fun to go through and the T200 set you bought is already guaranteed of selling for less then the tonight's T200 set. Good stuff; enjoy!

I batted .167 last night, but I did pick up the one lot that I most wanted--the 1904 Allegheny Card Co. Phelps--at a pretty reasonable price. I was a little surprised that MHCC and Mastronet (at least the lots that I was watching) closed so quickly. Only a little surprised, though, because it seemed that the the prices had jumped really high really quickly.

Jeff- I know....I might keep it and might not...in the long run...but do love the look of it..

Matt- I don't think the bottom corners would warrant a 5.....but the centering is what really enthused me on this one....I always thought this was a beautiful card in the set and so many of them are t/b off center...this one really looks nice...(centering is important to me on cards)

I think (at least in my opinion) most of the T206 oddities sold very cheap this time.

many of us were grandfathered in from the "good ole' days" when it was free. Even though I only win a handful of items a year (and none this time...), I'm pretty sure Mastro still appreciates my business, as I am a frequent underbidder....which nonetheless provides a lot of value to them.

Finally put away a T207 Lowdermilk and am glad I don't have to attempt crossing it over. Now I can crawl to the finish of this set. Old Lou should not be a $3K card, btw [typical T207 grumble].



Also won lot 273, the group of 25 PSA-graded T3 commons. Whimsical bid - I didn't expect to win it at $160 a card.

That is correct about the Collector's Auction. At least, that is how I started receiving the catalogs and bidding in their premier auctions without paying a fee.

I got shut out last night. I really wish I could have purchased the Burke negatives. I remember a few years ago Lelands had the same collection, and it was pulled I think due to estate issues.

I too started out with the Collector's Auctions and then started getting Premier auction catalogues for free. I do win from time to time in the Collector's Auctions.

And Phil, I feel your pain. I really wanted to take a run at the Aguilitas Joe Baseball Pop Lloyd but just couldn't make it happen. For what it's worth, I think that the Jud Wilson originally sold for about $40,000 before juice in the 2006 REA, and I forget what it sold for in Mastro last year. This was the third go around in as many years for both the Wilson and the Josh Gibson pieces, and someone definitely got hosed with these somewhere along the line as a consigner.

If you mention that you are from net54, they waive the $75 fee. I still had to put in a credit card number, but when registering I put (in one of the "comments" sections) that I was from net54 and didn't have to pay. While I'm just a tadpole, they will no doubt appreciate my bids even if I don't win anything!

You're right, the Jud Wilson P/C had sold for considerably more than last night in the past years' auctions. I think two factors caused this: first and foremost, as I mentioned in my earlier post, a number of the biggest players in the HOF RC market have gotten out over the past year or two, thus creating less competition and secondly, the economy is very tough right now and people don't have as much discretionary income to spend on baseball cards as they did a couple of years ago. Of course, I think gas prices are the underlying reason behind much of our economic difficulties right now.

I was also lucky to be one of collectors grandfathered in. Bought a signed ball years ago. Just sent it in to be consigned in their summer auction along with a 1910 Tip Top Mascot card.

Leon,

Do yourself a favor and show that PSA 4.5 Green Cobb to SGC. I have found that SGC is lenient on light corner wear for their SGC 60 T206 cards. The two PSA 4's that I had crossed to SGC 60's (a 33 Goudey Grove and T206 Cobb Bat On) are gorgeous cards with excellent centering, no creasing or wrinkles, but slightly rounded corners. That card is screaming for an SGC 60 holder, in my opinion.
