N172 Question

Hoping that an N172 expert can chime in here, because I don't know much about this complex set.

I have this Patrick Pettee card. In looking at the Standard Catalog and VCP, it does not appear that this pose is listed. In both sources, there's a pose where he's throwing (shown either with the Londons or Milwaukee), and a pose where he's tagging Bobby Lowe.

Clearly, in this pose, he's batting.



Is it normal for the Standard Catalog to miss a pose like that? I mean, I realize that there are thousands of N172s out there and that it's an unbelievably complicated set, but I don't want to misjudge this card (pun intended) and discover that I've got some crazy rare uncataloged OJ common that nobody's ever seen before.

Al,

I have been in the process of updating all the N172's to include every known variation, it is an ongoing process.

Here are all the poses and variations for Pettee. Actually there are no variations.

Bat on R/shoulder, looking/L "Pettee, 2d B., Londons"

This is the one you have...and here are the rest.

Ball in R/hand shoulder high "Pettee, 2d B., Londons"

Throw, R/hand head high "Pettee, 2d B., Londons"

Sliding into base "Pettee, 2nd B. Milwaukee"

About to tag Lowe "Pettee & Lowe, Milwaukee"

So all in all there is 5 cards of him in the N172 set.

Al--Bobby is absolutely right. The pose is 365-1. Pettee is a scarcer player and this is a very good card to have.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I do intend to sell the card; I just didn't want to put something out there that was too low (or too high).

Jay, will the new book have some kind of rarity/scarcity scale?

Dan--It won't rank all the cards as that would be assigning a higher degree of accuracy than exists. It will list, in the view of the authors, the 100 scarcest cards in the set. It will also rank the HOFers in the set by scarcity and list the 7 most desireable HOF cards (poses/variations) in the set.

The Old Judge book will assign numbers to every pose and have scans of nearly all of them, so people won't be forced to try to "crack the code" of pose descriptions to differentiate among them. This will make Mr. Binder's task far easier.

Can I assume you're going to rank the teams in order of difficulty. For example, finding a Wilkesbarres may be a tad bit more difficult than locating a Philadelphia card.

Fred--We did not do that, although we did mention that Wilkes Barre is the scarcest team in the set.
