A very tough 2nd Series (Short-Print) card. Larry Doby's 1st major BB card. This was the last card
that I acquired to complete my 101-card set.

Doby was my second to last, definitely a tough card. For some reason I had a hard time finding Goodman.

Since it seems the variations are often listed incorrectly on ebay, he's the 3 major variations

Aberson short (scarcer) and long sleeve (more common)

I would love to contribute to this thread, but in WNY where I grew up I never can recall ever seeing Leaf cards for sale, hence to this day I have never had a single Leaf card in my collection!

(presented only for the purpose of possible adding to Ted's accumulation of info on the history of '49 Leaf!)

Western NY state was one of the areas that the 1949 Leaf's were not distributed. I have heard the same from older

collectors in the Carolina's and west of the Mississippi River. That's too bad that you did not have them in your area.

Let me tell you....as kids, who collected these cards in the Spring of '49, we were fascinated by these cards.



I was 10 years old, when I opened those Red, White & Blue Leaf packs and found a Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Stan

Musial, or Ted Williams....I was in my glory.

Thanks for that confirmation--At least now I know I didn't just not remember seeing them!

I used to trade w/ friends & cousins, etc. from the Buffalo area to the Southern Tier and never came across any Leaf at all or you would think I'd have picked up 1 or 2 along the way.

Never found any in later yrs at yard sales in that area either--In fact I probably didn't know Leaf existed until I got back to the hobby in the '80's!

These cards are so sweet, probably the most 'pop art' type of set ever made. The cards in this thread are sick, I might have to start putting together a set of this. I have always wanted the Ted Williams and Jackie Robinson and of course Paige but was so busy working on other sets never did, but now that I have pretty much finished the three I was working on I could start. Was the Ruth included in the set as a tribute after his death, or marketing purposes ?

There are 14 HOFers in the 1st Series and 6 HOFers in the 2nd Series. Also there are 66 established All-Star game
veterans of that era and players from the 1948 World Series. The remaining 12 cards depict local players from the
Cubs or the White Sox (Leaf Gum was based in Chicago).

Color variations....the 2nd Ted Williams is actually a purple color that my scan does not show.

Thanks for showing all the great cards. I just started this set about a year ago and now I am hooked!!! The reason I started is because I had this card.
